Getting Apps in the Car - How do you do it?

Just picked up my Fusion Energi Titanium today!! Getting used to this technology (have a Lexus also that is much more intuitive). One thing I can't figure out for the life of me is how to get apps (like Pandora, etc which is already on my phone) in my car or where I would download a program from the Google Play store for Android. I'm sure its right in front of my face, but can't seem to find it! Thanks!

If that is the menu I'm thinking of, you use it to install updates from Ford and Microsoft. I had to do a Sync update the day after I got my car.

Not sure if this is the same thing, but how do I install an update and where do I find this if its not the same? Do i need a jump drive/USB or will the car automatically do it? Thanks!!!!

If there was an update available it would appear in your syncmyride account.

Download it to an empty USB thumb drive.

Install it in the car and go to the install page.

Once completed (print out the instructions because it says it is done twice).take the USB drive back to the computer and use the link on the web page to report the results.

Thanks. Have a Mac computer and have tried all three browsers (Safari, Firefox and Chrome) to download an update. Get a message in each of them re: Java not being enabled, however it is. Anyone else have this problem and suggested fixes?

It works fine on my 2011 MBA with Mountain Lion using Firefox.

Do you have the latest version of Java installed direct from the Java website and not the old version that Apple installs?

You have to go through a couple of warnings that try to prevent the use of Java.

Just updated Firefox and went through all the warnings and it worked. Downloaded the update on a USB and went to the car to Install Apps/Software Update and did it - said updating 1 of 0 so not sure if it really downloaded the update or not. Do you really have to leave the car on for 25-35 minutes before downloading?

I assume you did the download that checks the current revision levels of the car.  That works differently than an actual update.  It is done almost immediately.  An actual update takes a long time and usually there are two update complete messages.  I've only done an actual update once around August 2009 on my 2010 Hybrid.  There were no more updates for that car.  I haven't seen any updates for my 2013 yet.

Not to mention if you have Navigation, that REQUIRES an update by Ford as they swap out your Flash card (with the navigation maps on it).

I was told that you don't have to have a service visit to update the Navigation.  In the other forum they said all you have to do is buy the new SD card and you can insert it yourself.

My wife has a Lexus 450h that requires a service visit to update the Nav.  You buy the license USB key, then the service guy takes it into the back, hooks up the diagnostic laptop and inserts the USB in the laptop.  That allows him to download the new maps and upload them to the car. The process is EXTREMELY slow and can rack up a two hour shop charge.  We only update our Nav every third year.  Our old RX300 that we traded in had a DVD drive and all I had to do was buy the new DVD and drop it in the drive myself.  Much better.  My recommendation is to go with a smartphone on the Lexus.

Ok, this is why I skipped the nav system:

Ford.

$795.

8" display.

Map updates. Only Yearly, approx $150.

Real-time traffic. $6/mo. But only if you already buy SiriusXM For $140/yr.

Garmin nuvi 3597

$350

5" display

Updates Weekly (or as often as you want), free for life

Real-time traffic. Free for life

Why spend the extra money? Especially when I can use the garmin in all three of my cars. I just don't get it.

I really like an instant touch "where the hell am I on the map" ability, along with the compass and name of street display along with the speed limit.

A car "should" have these things.

Let's face it, with everyone running around comparing $1000 here or there for gas or options, a great deal of a car's cost is based on whether we like it and what it does.  Once I am looking at 40k, $795 does not bother me, much.

My Google nav on my android razr maxx is significantly better than your Nuvi and it cost me $49, BTW...  :-)

@Rhyalus,

If the nav was a one-time charge of $795 and everything else was equal, I would definitely have bought it. But those recurring costs that make it cost multiple Thousands of dollars over the life of the car... That chased me away.

I used to count on the nav on my phone too. But then, on more than one occasion when I was lost in San Francisco, the buildings blocked the phone reception and the map just stopped. Once I learned I couldn't rely on the phone nav when/where I needed it the most I got the garmin, which works even if cell coverage isn't there.

Are you sure about this, they charge $150 for the card? It's just an SD card, I wonder if you can copy it... With the Navigation, I thought you got 5 years of the sync service and that got you the traffic, not the XM... hmm. Ok, I got the navigation, but I guess I won't use it after the 6 months free subscription runs out. I was contemplating not even having them start up the free account so I don't run over accidently.

According to our sales guy, they are not charging us for map updates for the foreseeable future...  we even challenged him on it because we were sure we were told it would cost money for our 2 year old Explorer.

I think what has happened is that this PR catastrophe has forced them to pull back on charging for software updates.

Of course, there is no "contract" that assures this and it could change at any moment....

I did not drive the Ford in San Fran, but I did in Manhattan.  The car did fairly well at keep track of the satellites.

The cell service may be spotty as you say, but between the Ford and cell phone I have been doing OK.

Your best case against the Ford Nav would be the cost for updates, but this is not clear to me - so far we received A3 and A4 at no charge, but this was in the first two years of the Ford Explorer's life.
