Ford Fusion Energi: Real EV battery range

Hi Everyone, I leased a Fusion Energi Titanium this past weekend and I love it.

I've created a blog to share what I'm learning about the car.  The forum admins here have granted me permission to post links to my blog articles here for discussion.

Well I hope it last for you as I have a Fusion Energi Titanium as well and having problems with the range after a about 4 week of charging 10-11 hours a night and only getting 17-19 miles at full charge. If you know how to correct please reply.

I regularly achieve a distance of 23.5 EV miles from my home to my work with about 85% of that a highway speeds of 60mph.  Of course, at that point my HVB is depleted and I have no way to charge at work yet.  So my return trip home is as a Hybrid.  But the battery range is highly dependent upon driving habits and use of climate control.  The battery indicator is an estimate and one that you can impact either negatively or positively.  (a little battery humor there)

Help us out a little and we may be able to help.

 

Are you running the climate system? (heat or A/C) (If the climate system is on, click it off and watch the gauge instantly put miles on to the range estimate).  

 

How good are your braking scores? 90%-100% or 30%-40%? (Regeneration is critical to the full range)

 

Have you tried the coaching screen? What is your Cruising Score? Your Brake score? Your Acceleration score?

 

How much of your trip is on the highway? How fast are you driving on the highway? (Higher speeds will drain the battery quickly)

 

If you drive this car like you might drive a gas powered car, then 17-19 miles seems reasonable, especially if you are running the heater or A/C.

Think I am on the outside of the range envelope with a 32 mile commute, 35 mph speed limit, 4 stoplights, and straight and level roadbed. Florida flat.

Best range 35 miles on one charge. See about 29 to 30 miles with the a/c on, fan speed slow, recirculate on.

 

 

(You can get the a/c draw down to about 350 watts. Outside air on a mid to high eighties day, you are looking at about a 800 to 900 watt draw. Click up the fan speed and you are above 1200 watts no problem.)

I am getting the estimated 21 most of the time. It's amazing what a difference the A/C makes. Just making it four degrees warmer will increase the miles.

 

Most of the time my charge estimate is the 21 claimed. However, this morning it estimated 24 miles.

 

I just wish it had more range. My commute to work is 42 miles one way. No charger at the office. I am still trying to figure out how to drive the car efficiently and if I should just run it in the auto mode, switch to hybrid for certain type of roads etc.

My commute is 46 miles...I use EV auto until I get to the highway, then I do EV later... This maximizes the use of EV and regen.

 

You have to use some gas... :-)

My commute is, approximately, 35 miles one way. The first 2 are city. The next 22 are highway speed (65-75mph). The final 10 are a mixture of slow, bumper-to-bumper highway traffic and/or city (depending on if I try to avoid the morning backups). I use EV later for the first 2 miles because the hybrid mode (and EV+) keeps it in electric. I use auto for the highway speeds. It then uses all of the electric and switches to hybrid. They hybrid mode keeps it in electric for half of the final stretch of the drive, where regenerative braking saves the day. I use anywhere from 0-0.2 gallons of gas.

 

So, on my 35 mile one-way trip, with a battery that says 21-25 miles, I average 28-32 miles EV. Kind of goes against the grain of what everyone is saying, but it works for me.
