apm Posted April 15, 2013 at 02:32 PM Report Share Posted April 15, 2013 at 02:32 PM (edited) I found the following listing on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Battery-Charger-for-Electric-Vehicles-220-Volt-EV-battery-charger-/330903956590?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d0b69ac6e&vxp=mtr It is for a portable L2 charger (16 amps) made by a company called Kitron Microelectronics from Sweeden. It is listed for $150 + $20 shipping. The problem is that the plug is not J1772, but some kind of European standard. The J1772 cable can also be bought on eBay for about $150. Questions:How difficult would be it to change cable to the J1772?Is 16amps high enough to charge the Energi in 2 1/2 hours? This could be an inexpensive solution for a 220V charger to use at home on the dryer outlet. Thanks for your input...Regads,APM P.S. I think the charger can be had for less than $150 as the listing is accepting best offers... murphy Posted April 15, 2013 at 02:40 PM Report Share Posted April 15, 2013 at 02:40 PM J1772 is not just a connector specification. It also involves a communication protocol for the charger in the car to communicate with the charge unit. Does this unit understand that protocol? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAE_J1772http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAE_J1772
rtshinn Posted April 15, 2013 at 08:13 PM Report Share Posted April 15, 2013 at 08:13 PM I would get a charger with a J1772 compliant connector. The protocols on thecharger are more likely to be correct, in my opinion.
apm Posted April 15, 2013 at 08:49 PM Author Report Share Posted April 15, 2013 at 08:49 PM (edited) Thanks for the replies... although it sounds very appealing to get a L2 for $300 less, I'm not getting it unless I know for sure that it will work. So far it doesn't look like it will. I have already sent a message to the seller to see if anyone has actually converted the charget to J1772 successfully. I will post his response here if they do respond. Regards,APM Edited April 15, 2013 at 08:50 PM by apm
meyersnole Posted April 16, 2013 at 02:18 AM Report Share Posted April 16, 2013 at 02:18 AM I think the cheapest one pointed out on the board is the clipper creek charger: http://stores.intuitwebsites.com/ClipperCreekInc/-strse-6/Level-2-EVSE%2C-Level/Detail.bok at $595 on sale. Might want to ping Mr Fusion to see if he got his yet and if he likes it.
apm Posted April 16, 2013 at 01:44 PM Author Report Share Posted April 16, 2013 at 01:44 PM (edited) Here is the reply from the eBay seller: "Yes we have changed the plug ends from the European standard to the US standard so it plugs into a US 220v receptacle and have changed the end to the car with a J1772 plug. However, note this will not make it a SAE standard but it functions. It does not have the pilot signal lead but that is not required to function." Does it make sense? Does anyone think it will work... I don't know very much about this, so I'm not convinced! Might want to ping Mr Fusion to see if he got his yet and if he likes it.I had my ClipperCreek installed last Friday, then left for vacation Saturday morning. I did charge the car from almost zero on that Friday. I love how fast it charged compared to the 110 charger. I also put a meter on it to measure my usage. I'm very happy with everything, especially for the price. meyersnole

I may cheap out on lead based toys for the kids, but not for my car...
