Poor HV Battery Range

Hello,

Is anyone seeing a very poor outside temp/other score when you turn off your Fusion Energi?  No matter what temperature it is outside, I always get a terrible score when turning off the car.  PS - In order to see this score on the dashboard, you have to turn the car off with some HV battery charge remaining.  Otherwise, it will say something like 'Thanks for driving a hybrid'.

Any info would be a great help.  I am getting around 17 miles per charge and think something is causing my battery to drain.

What is the ambient temperature?  I'm getting around 10 miles from mine due to the freezing temperatures.  Anything below 65° F is considered cold as far as the battery is concerned.

The battery is completely disconnected from the car, by two contactors, when the car is off.  Temperature is the only thing that can affect it.

A Prius owner told me that as the batteries chalk up more miles, their useful life wanes. How many miles on your Energi? I think the batteries are warranted for 100,000 miles. My Prius friend told me he got almost 200k before he had to replace the battery pack.
Also if your heater, heater fan or AC fan is on it will substantially reduce your all EV range. (The higher the blower fan speed the more juice is drawn.) The AC to my amazement doesn’t draw down the range much unless the blower fan is on high.

Also check your tire pressure. Low tire pressure will reduce range.

good luck and let us know if you find the problem.

The warranty doesn't cover normal HVB degradation. Short of catastrophic failure (nearly no capacity) Ford isn't likely to replace it under the warranty. Also, if the 3/36 warranty is up, you will be charged the "diagnostic fee" by the dealer to even look at the car. If they find no problem or a problem not covered under the powertrain warranty you'll be on the hook for the diagnostic fee, plus the parts/labor of the repair if you so choose to proceed.

Hi - what year is your Fusion? If it's before a 2019 model, I'm afraid that 17 Mile range is not all that bad for the 7kWhr configuration. That's what I regularly got in my 2014 Cmax Energi unless I was hypermiling the heck out of it... The Fusion is a very heavy car, almost 4000lbs (my Cmax was considerably lighter) so I'd be surprised if you got much better than that.

What are your "driving scores" like? Hard acceleration, high cruising speeds and braking that consistently requires use of the friction brakes (vs. using 100% regenerative braking) will decrease range. You can also do a battery draindown test to estimate the HVB capacity. Run the car from a full charge in EV now mode, with all the accessories and HVAC turned off; reset the trip odometer immediately after you turn the car on and take note of the kWh used when the EV portion of the HVB is depleted and the car switches to hybrid mode. The best measurements happen with an ambient temperature of about 70 degrees - new it would report about 5.6 kWh. Depending on the temperature and what your measurement reveals, it may indicate faster-than-expected battery degradation.

I don't drive hard at all. I can try what you said about full charge to EV now mode and see what I get.

And being in SoCal we have 70-80° temps right now. Supposed to cool down in a few weeks. ?

I was getting around 24-25 when I lived in Phoenix.  But last May I moved to Illinois for my job.  It almost instantly dropped to about 18.  Now that winter is setting in, I'm getting about 16.

But I have always found that this number doesn't truly represent how many actual miles you will get on battery.  It's always a mile or two lower.

So you're back in IL now?  AZ didn't last very long... what, 2 years?

About 2.5 years.  Phoenix was nice at first but it's getting so overcrowded I just couldn't put up with the crime, traffic and crappy air quality (too much construction).  Plus just too far away from my friends and family.

But I made a killing on the sale of my house.  Bought it for $315,000.  Sold it for $480,000.  Only appraised for $400,000 but the buyers didn't care and made up the difference.
