Highest Mileage Achieved w/Energi's Out There

Hey Everyone,

I've had two Energi's, a 2013 and my current 2019. I am considering buying the car off lease soon and typically, when I buy a car, I like to hold onto it for a minimum of 10 years. Based on everyone's experience out there, what is a realistic mileage for the long haulers? I've personally never known anyone with an Energi that's had it for longer than 110k but I am sure they are out there. I'd really like to know that I can get some practical utility out of the battery beyond say 125k but I may just be too optimistic. What do you all think? I live in SE Michigan, and typically charge on a 110v each day.

That is a loaded question, though I don't think you knew that.  It largely depends on how good you treat your battery.  Being a 2019 with the 9.0kWh battery, you will be better off, but charging habits, driving habits, and local temperatures really help determine battery life.

My 2015 with the 7.6 kWh battery is doing great, but I'm really careful in how I use the battery.  I have ~3% degradation at 80k+ miles (5.4 kWh on the test, vs 5.6 new).  Around town I get 28-30 miles per charge, and 22-23 at freeway speeds.  Others on this site have suffered a far worse fate.

The best measure would be to look at your 2013 since it probably had a fair number of miles on it.  How many kWh did you get from a 100-0% discharge, and how many miles?  If it was above 5kWh I would bet your 2019 will last you a long time.  You may not have ever measured that though on your old car.

My 2013 Energi has 150k on it now. In mild weather, I can still go 18 highway miles at 70mph without any issue. Back when COVID first hit and I never left town, I was getting upwards of 25 miles in the city. For another data point there's a guy on one of the Facebook groups that has a verified 400k+ on his Energi and uses it for daily Uber and food delivery, he hasn't discussed degradation as much though. I will say that for me, it's the chassis that's starting to show age. Creaking bushings, softer shocks, alignment seems to get more out of whack at annual inspection with each passing year. The drivetrain is solid, and since you have the Energi model, the 2013-14 HF-35 bearing problem isn't really an issue on your 13. The 19 represents a lot of what Ford has learned over the years. I think you can pretty well expect the 19 to do better than your 13 in these categories.

Jsamp and I have gotten into it in here before ? about battery usage and kindness. My opinion is that the car lives to serve me and that if I ever arrive home with power leftover in the battery, then you're doing it wrong. If you bought a plugin to displace gasoline usage, then you should use it as such. My battery is doing just fine, but at 150k, the car really owes me nothing at this point.

Edit: Oh, and to address your question... Look at used prices for other 2019 Energi. In theory the residual price should pretty closely reflect the buyout price. I got mine for a steal because it had some minor damage to the front that fixed myself... saved me thousands off the price of the car. If your lease buyout is pretty close to the market, then you should buy it. I have no doubt you'll get 10 years out of it if you can be patient that long. I hope to be driving a mainstream BEV in 5 years or less though.
