Rich Posted November 5, 2020 at 01:01 PM Report Share Posted November 5, 2020 at 01:01 PM (edited) I had a problem with the car that required clearing an emission error. The car has 6 internal emission tests that it must execute before the vehicle can pass the inspection emission readiness test. The test is very involved and took me 700 miles of driving before the final test completed. My driving is mostly highway and suburban. Be sure to run the car fully on gasoline so don't plug it in until you pass your emission test. You can verify your emission readiness using an OBDC II reader. Many auto parts stores will scan for free, just be clear that you are looking for emission readiness. Run all tests on ½ to ¾ tank of gas 1. Drive at 40 MPH until ECT is at least 170° F . 2. Cruise at 40 MPH for up to 4 minutes. 3. Cruise at 45 to 65 MPH for 10 minutes 4. Drive in stop and go traffic conditions. Include five different constant cruise speeds: from 25 to 45 MPH over a 10 minute period. 5. From a stop, accelerate to 45 MPH at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. Repeat 3 times. 6. Bring the vehicle to a stop. Idle with transmission in drive for 2 minutes. 7. Moderately accelerate to 50 MPH and cruise for at least 15 seconds. Stop vehicle and repeat 40 MPH cruising for at least 30 seconds. Stop for at least 20 seconds and repeat step five times. 8. From a stop, accelerate 65 MPH then decelerate at closed throttle until 40 MPH (no brakes). Repeat this 3 times. 9. Park vehicle for a minimum of 8 hours. Repeat all steps ---- can take ~500 miles total ---- Edited November 5, 2020 at 01:21 PM by Rich
murphy Posted November 5, 2020 at 02:36 PM Report Share Posted November 5, 2020 at 02:36 PM I live in PA and drive the car less than 5000 miles a year. I am exempt from emission tests. Note that if the 12 volt battery dies or is disconnected the engine loses all of its data and has to learn everything all over again. This doesn't make sense for the Energi. If you've been driving steps 1-5 and engine is up to temp, if you stop for even 15 seconds, the ICE will shut off, no matter what mode you are in. You can't idle for 2 minutes. The only way I know to have it run for 2 minutes is if the engine is cold. How do you do this part?
murphy Posted November 5, 2020 at 06:31 PM Report Share Posted November 5, 2020 at 06:31 PM Push the accelerator pedal to the floor. The computer will start and run the engine at an RPM that it considers reasonable. There is no connection between the accelerator pedal and the engine. The pedal is actually two three terminal potentiometers that tell the computer what you want. The computer decides what it will tell the engine to do. There is a process in the Owner's Manual to perform if the battery has been disconnected so the engine can relearn its operating parameters. It's in the chapter about replacing the battery.
