Hardp Posted January 13, 2020 at 02:47 PM Report Share Posted January 13, 2020 at 02:47 PM I have a 2019 Fusion energi. Whenever the temperature slips to below 40 degrees or so, the EV mode switches off and I go to gas mode. The car is garaged so regardless of the outside temp, when I start off in the morning the indoor temp is never less that 55 degrees. Is this Normal? murphy Posted January 13, 2020 at 03:12 PM Report Share Posted January 13, 2020 at 03:12 PM Which mode is the car in? Auto EV Now EV Later I drive exclusively in EV Now and have not encountered the engine starting. There are two situations that will force the engine to run. Gas in the tank that is older than 18 months. The engine runs to get rid of the gas and force the tank to be refilled with new gas. Oil maintenance mode. Both are covered in the manual. Battery efficiency drops when the temperature goes below 70° F. If the heater is on the engine can run to get a source of heat in addition to the 5000 ohm resistance heater. Hard acceleration will also force the engine to start.
Hardp Posted January 13, 2020 at 03:43 PM Author Report Share Posted January 13, 2020 at 03:43 PM Definitly not gas or hard acceleration. I assume that if I run in EV Now mode, when battery power is exhausted it will automatically switch to EV Later (or Auto Mode). Correct? Hardp Posted January 13, 2020 at 03:45 PM Author Report Share Posted January 13, 2020 at 03:45 PM Also, I generally don't run the heater, only the seat and steering wheel heaters.

In case you aren't aware of how hybrid mode works, the car keeps the hybrid battery at the 50% point so there is room to capture regenerative braking energy. The only reason for the ICE to fire up when in EV mode would be if you turned on the defroster. I often get a pop-up message "engine enabled due to defrost setting" when in EV and it is cold out and I turn on the defroster. Other than that, I don't see why it would be turning on the ICE at that temperature.
