mjb Posted November 14, 2019 at 02:05 AM Report Share Posted November 14, 2019 at 02:05 AM My dog chewed on the male plug and I need to replace it. Does anyone know what it is called? I know it has the usual 3 wires, red, green and white plus it has 2 low voltage wires that are brown and blue. Pretty sure the brown one goes to some type of heat resistor, couldn't figure out what or where the blue low voltage goes to. I am not an electrical person as you can tell but I sure don't want to buy a new complete charger for the want of a male plug. Any advice? thanks
jsamp Posted November 14, 2019 at 05:58 AM Report Share Posted November 14, 2019 at 05:58 AM The extra 2 wires are a feedback temperature loop that tell the EVSE that the plug is overheating and shuts itself down. There were too many wall plugs overheating and melting down/causing fires. That is why Ford recalled the older EVSE's. I'd start with the manufacturer, which is not Ford.. They won't be much help 'cause they'd rather sell you a new one. I believe the unit is made by Amazing-E though the board inside is made by Clipper Creek. Those are two places you can start. Clipper creek's main facility is in Auburn, CA which is where they do warranty/repairs. That's probably your best bet. mjb
murphy Posted November 14, 2019 at 11:52 AM Report Share Posted November 14, 2019 at 11:52 AM The plug is an SAE J1772. If you are not an electrical person you are not qualified to replace a plug that could burn your house down if done incorrectly.
mjb Posted November 14, 2019 at 06:32 PM Author Report Share Posted November 14, 2019 at 06:32 PM The female end is an SAE J1772. I need to know what the male end is, the one that plugs into the residential receptacle. I won't be burning my house down. Although I am not an Electrician I have repaired service panels and replaced buss bars with permits pulled from the county. If I run into trouble I will ask my partner who is a master Electrician. You are correct that if I am not qualified I should seek help. thanks!

It has a temperature sensing device, probably a thermistor, that has to match the circuitry in the EVSE.
68mustangjim Posted December 31, 2019 at 03:01 PM Report Share Posted December 31, 2019 at 03:01 PM (edited) The unit is recalled see if dealer will ignore dog chewing and replace under recall. Ford usually does not and if they are going to they (Ford/Dealer) are going to dispose of it. the top photo is the recalled unit the bottom is the replacement same as Amazing E 220v chargers. 16vjohn Posted January 7, 2020 at 10:04 PM Report Share Posted January 7, 2020 at 10:04 PM The part that plugs into the wall at your home? That's a NEMA 5-15: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Leviton-15-Amp-125-Volt-3-Wire-Plug-Orange-R51-515PV-0OR/205165505?MERCH=REC-_-pipsem-_-202664499-_-205165505-_-N
jsamp Posted January 8, 2020 at 06:37 AM Report Share Posted January 8, 2020 at 06:37 AM If you have the EVSE in the second picture above (the one with the black J1772 plug) you cannot replace the NEMA 5-15 with a Home Depot replacement. That unit has a thermistor with 2 extra wires in the NEMA 5-15 plug and if you don't hook up that circuit, it won't charge your car. Maybe you can short the circuit, but I wouldn't count on that, and you'd be in danger of burning down your house (that is why Ford recalled the unit with the white J1772 plug in the first picture ). 16vjohn Posted January 9, 2020 at 01:40 AM Report Share Posted January 9, 2020 at 01:40 AM Forgot about that thermistor, good call-out. Perhaps you can post of a picture of the damage. You might be able to just fix the plug you have.
