Heat and battery charging

Thoughts?

My question is the "heat degrades battery" comment that they found is not the case when testing a commercially available battery pack.

Is there truly empirical data that shows heat when charging is no good?

Here is an informative study put out ~3 years ago that looked at a myriad of variables:  https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy16osti/66708.pdf  They mention a lot of variables studied including temperature, though it is sometimes hard to tease out what is due to temp vs other things.  Take a look at page 19 in particular about temperature effects.

The article you quote is only looking at one thing: plating of the electrodes during charging, and how temperature affects that.  While they may be onto something, often times when you improve one thing, there is a drawback somewhere else.  In this case we don't know yet.  It will likely take years to figure this all out, and then how do you keep your battery at 60°C (140°F) while charging?  Maybe some clever person will figure out how to have a heat pump keep it cool when you need it cool and keep it hot when fast charging.

For now, I'll file this in the "battery claims that may not amount to anything" category and wait to hear more.
