Madevilz Posted October 12, 2019 at 08:28 PM Report Share Posted October 12, 2019 at 08:28 PM Have this car for a month now (Energi 2017), and it is only the first time today I had my rear windows down. Around 40 MPH+ the wind begins to be very noisy. On the highway, I swear, it sounded like a helicopter, to the point that it was hurting my ears. Never had such intense throbbing noise from wind in any of my previous cars. If I put the front windows down, it became a lot less noisy. So I tried a few combos, both front windows down, not noisy, one or both rear windows down, very noisy. All windows down, not noisy. Should I get my car checked? Gkinla Posted October 13, 2019 at 12:18 AM Report Share Posted October 13, 2019 at 12:18 AM (edited) It happens on all modern cars in the quest for efficient aerodynamics, and better fuel economy. The engineers try to get laminar air flow across the car. When you open a window or several windows, the air flow is disrupted and it buffers. Opening cross windows caused the buffering to be out of phase, thus quieting the noise. Much like the electronic noise canceling system in the car. jsamp Posted October 13, 2019 at 02:22 AM Report Share Posted October 13, 2019 at 02:22 AM Well put Gkinla. I've found that having the windows NOT equal side-to-side makes it go away best. If I have both front windows down, it starts, but if I then lower one of the rear windows even just an inch or two, it goes away (mostly).
