Tombennettt Posted August 18, 2019 at 07:15 PM Report Share Posted August 18, 2019 at 07:15 PM 2015 Ford Fusion Energi Platnium 117.000 miles So I’ve been having this problem since around February, it all started on my way to work on an unusually cold day, the wrench light came on.. didn’t think too much about it since everything still seemed to work fine.. after few weeks later finally got a check engine light to come on with a P0A81 code for the hybrid battery pack fan failed to turn on or failed to close.. did some digging on google and didn’t really come up with much, I found that it only really happens when it was cold out, since summer was coming again didn’t pay it much mind....until driving home one day the battery light would come on along with the CEL and the wrench.. so i went and bought a new battery, everything was working great for a couple of months, the weather got nicer and it feel to the back of my mind... AND THEN! I saw the wrench light again and the CEL so I figured now was the time to do something about it.. I folded my back seats down and always drive with my windows down so the battery got some airflow... it works like a charm. But now it’s going to get colder and I should stop being lazy.. I got to the fans and found neither of them would turn on even though I am only getting the code for the one, I swapper the connectors to the other fan and still would only get the number 1 fan fail, I only get about 5 miles out of a charge because I assume it heats up too much and kills the charging to protect itself.. I find it hard to believe that both fans would go out at the same time, so I inspected some of the wiring (I’ve read things about the wiring being shorted to ground) but didn’t really find anything..I’m out of ideas and don’t want to pay someone to do something if it’s as simple as replacing a fan Has anyone else seen something like this? murphy Posted August 18, 2019 at 11:29 PM Report Share Posted August 18, 2019 at 11:29 PM Check the wiring immediately in front (toward the driver) of the 12 volt battery. There was a problem with wires laying on top of a vertical steel panel. I surrounded mine with foam blocks years ago.
Constantin Posted June 15, 2020 at 06:21 AM Report Share Posted June 15, 2020 at 06:21 AM Hello, How you resolve the problem? I have the same problem...
testriderchuck Posted November 7, 2021 at 05:30 AM Report Share Posted November 7, 2021 at 05:30 AM HMMM, I've got the same wrench @ "start". '14 energi SE, 176K I did note that at least one (right side) cooling fan runs when plugged in and charging. The wires on the vertical panel (inside of wheel well) are all secured in what appears to be factory position, nothing nearby to chafe against. If I hafta pay dealer $135 to "diagnose" the problem... Seems like the dealers should have access to a database of codes and what fixed the problem. Or is that concept a pipe dream???
testriderchuck Posted November 7, 2021 at 06:37 AM Report Share Posted November 7, 2021 at 06:37 AM Further investigation revealed chafed wires where they crossed the mount bracket for the cooling fan assembly, along with exposed wire. I used zip ties. Here's hoping the car will clear the code on its own....
