Neil Posted August 14, 2019 at 02:28 PM Report Share Posted August 14, 2019 at 02:28 PM After replacing my brakes a couple of weeks ago I noticed that the lug nuts on all four wheels are in bad shape. Normally they take a 19mm socket to remove, but all of them have swollen and the 19 won't fit. I had to go buy a 20mm socket, which is an odd size. I did a little research online and found out that this is a common problem with Fords. Apparently water gets between the actual steel nut and the chrome plating and causes it to swell. Last weekend I took the car to Costco to get the tires rotated and balanced and they could not get the lug nuts off - and they didn't have a 20mm socket. I bought some new Lug Nuts online (Amazon, $25 for 20) and will be putting them on this weekend and trying again at Costco. Has Anyone else had this problem? murphy Posted August 14, 2019 at 02:34 PM Report Share Posted August 14, 2019 at 02:34 PM I replaced my lug nuts a long time ago. If the socket isn't completely seated it will distort the aluminum cap. The ones I bought are solid, they do not have caps. ptjones

Davidoo Posted August 23, 2019 at 11:20 PM Report Share Posted August 23, 2019 at 11:20 PM I have a 2017 FFE and recently rotated the tires myself. I had a flat tire a while ago that the dealer replaced. I was able to change them all ok, except when I tried to use my 19mm socket with torque wrench on the tire the dealer changed, the wrench would barely fit. I had to lightly pound the wrench onto the nut with a rubber hammer and finally got them. I went to the dealer and bought some replacements. They said they are aware of the problem and it happens when they put the air wrench on it. If that is the case, they should give replacements for free and do a recall. I would also be very careful in getting replacements from the auto parts store or online cheap. These are designed for the wheels on the car with the proper taper angle and hardness of the metal. I wouldn't put anything back on them I didn't get at the dealer.

Interesting they say they're not compatible, but they work fine and were $17 and I have had them for 50K miles. Paul

jsamp Posted August 25, 2019 at 07:40 PM Report Share Posted August 25, 2019 at 07:40 PM Cheaper does not always equal better. That said, I also don't assume that the Ford products are better than others, especially when it's the Ford lug nuts that are corroding under the plating. ptjones
