Trip 1 seems to have reset half of itself

Recommended Posts

Pics are taken the same day of Trip 1 and Trip 2.  Trip 2 info looks fine.

Trip 1 is the trip meter I've chosen to never reset since I bought the car.  I don't recall any dumb move where I might have done something unusual with Trip 1.

But somehow it reset the miles and EV miles, but didn't touch or recalculate the MPG nor the kWh (that's my overall mpg, and same for kWH since the majority of my miles are long EV-Later trips).

Trip 1:

Miles: 90.8 incorrect, should be ~ 10,000

EV miles 73.6 incorrect, doesn't even make sense since Trip 2 shows more miles with less EV miles.

49.7 mpg - correct

412 kWh - seems correct

74:34:45 trip time is incorrect for either displayed miles of 90.9 (= ~ 1 mph average speed), or real miles of ~ 10,000 (= ~135 mph average speed).  Wild assumption, but perhaps this is similar to the dropped thousands digit for EV miles (not trip time) described by this post. If I make it 174 instead of 74, that equates to an average speed of about 57 mph over 10,000 miles, which could be accurate.

Trip 2: looks perfectly accurate since last reset.

Has anyone seen their trip meter go haywire like this?

Thanks.  Rollover explains it.

Trip miles roll over at 9999.9 (see calculation below).

Trip EV miles roll over at 999.9 (deduced below).

Trip time rolls over at 99:99:99  (see my above post's "wild assumption").

Trip miles rolllover calculation:

My dealer reset Trip 1 when I bought the car used with 10,432 total miles.

10,432 + 9999.9 + 90.8 (showing on display now) = 20,523, which is exactly my total miles as displayed.

Trip EV miles for me run about 1/3 of Trip miles, so it couldn't have rolled over at 9999.9.  Unfortunately for me, I haven't monitored Trip 1 EV miles--it looks like it's rolled over several times.

The other two look right:

MPG looks right, as I do monitor that (ptjones will be ashamed of me for such a low score in a plug-in).

kWh *may* roll over at 999.9, tbd.  But my current value of 412 looks right.  Ignoring kWh used by accessories, 412 kWh equates to 75 complete plug-in electron fillups at 5.5 kWh, which equates to 1,650 plug-in EV miles @ 22 mi./fillup, which seems in the ballpark.

Ford should know better.  People who buy the hybrids and the Energi want to have the stats that makes their purchase seem important.  To have the EV roll over at 1000 kms or miles is ridiculous.  How is one to ever say, that the car has lets say 50K miles on it, but the engine only ran for half of that.  Very poor decision by Ford.  Also, are they scared to advertise that the Energi is a PHEV?  The badging uses none of the commonly used symbols to indicate any sort of electrical capabilities.  Why?  Does Ford think I spend 35 grand on a technologically advanced vehicle, but I want to keep it a secret.  Just don't get why they make such a great vehicle, yet seem to want to hide it behind their other product line.

It's like they assigned the Trip Meter design to an inexperienced person, who took the assignment as simply to reconstruct vintage trip meters.  Not thinking about how with two, one could serve another purpose.

I say inexperienced, because some of their programming design is dazzling.  I read this, but haven't tested it, where someone said they used the dash display to locate the nearest gas station, and when they pulled in to the pumps, the fuel filler door popped open on its own.

You're right about poor advertising.  Though now that we see "rolling coal", blocking superchargers, and keying EVs, all the more reason to appreciate going incognito.
