Considering 2016 Energi- Reliability?

Hello to all,

I am considering a used Energy for my wife and am very concerned about the reliability rating this car has. My current vehicle, 01 Jetta TDI, is fantastic on fuel but is killing me on maintenance.

Is the Fusion Energi a safe bet?

2015~2018, <30k is where I'm looking.

Best trim for the money?

I've had my 2015 Energi Titanium for over 3 years now.  Bought as a CPO with 8500 miles on it.  I love the thing.  I moved from a 2010 Eos that became unreliable.  Have to mention that last year, a 15 year old out for a Sunday drive with her mother pulled out in front of me from a side street.  I had no chance to stop and hit them as I was going 40 mph.  They were in a Jeep so I hit their side step bar and frame.  No injuries, thankfully, to anyone, other than airbag burns.  What I am saying is that the car is very safe and the features did what they were supposed to do.  I'm still driving the car.  They put it back together very well.  I am glad I was in the Fusion rather than the Eos.

I'd stick with a CPO if you can, just because it's more likely to have been properly maintained. 

 

I bought my 2015 CPO a little over a year ago with 43K miles on it.  I'm now at 60K and the only 2 issues were minor ones that existed the day I picked up the car (charge port light quadrant and Lumbar adjustment not working).  Maintenance and repairs have been zero.  I'll do my first oil change soon.

I got a CPO that was originally a company car used by a Ford executive - it was barely a year old with 7800 miles on it. 

 

Car has been mechanically and electrically reliable over the last 10,000 miles. Never needed any warranty repairs so far. 

 

My previous car was a 2013 Fusion Hybrid SE - essentially the same car minus the plug in capability - and it was mechanically reliable as well though it had a few minor non-drivetrain-related issues fixed under warranty (peeling sunglasses holder, improperly calibrated left turn signal, cracking sound when braking that required new washers. It was also the very first production run (July 2012) and any flaws it had were "patched" in later model years.

 

If the 2016 you're considering isn't CPO, get a PPI before doing anything - check for rust, error codes, peeling trim, etc. Test all the on-board tech like blind spot monitors. 

 

Titanium and Platinum are the preferred trims, especially if you live in a hot area since they're the only way to get cooled seats. While you can get the rest of the cool tech like blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise on the SE trim, most SE buyers opted for basic models and so you're unlikely to find a used SE with all the tech.

You can get a 2018 Energi for mid 20s brand new, leased, at least in SE Michigan.  2019 high 20s. 

If you buy, the rebates are lower, so net cost is about $2,000 higher, including if you lease and then buy the car at the end.  

 

2019 tax credit is $4,600, whereas 2018 is $4,007.  You only get that if you buy, but that's included in my numbers.

Except when the Energi's rebate via leasing is so much higher than with purchasing (plus the tax credit) that even after all fees you end up $2,000 ahead.  We leased (first time ever) and plan on buying it at the end of the lease and selling it for a profit, unless the market collapses.
