fullertonfusion Posted September 19, 2018 at 06:37 PM Report Share Posted September 19, 2018 at 06:37 PM I have a 2013 Fusion Energi, which by all indications is still a solid, totally great car. Here's my problem. Whether I charge at 120V or 240V (I have a Level 2 charger at home), I can only get to a 75% charge, or a maximum 'miles remaining' reading of 15 miles. I am well aware of how battery range is calculated, and that is merely an estimate, based on past driving habits, etc. I have had my battery tested multiple times, by not one but two local Ford service locations, and each time been told that there is no apparent degradation and that my battery is totally healthy. If that's true, then there has to be another explanation as to why I can't charge beyond 75%. When I charge the car, it gets to 75% and then stops charging, as indicated by the glowing ring on the charging port. On my most recent service, they tested the charging ring and found it was broken, but the tech was adamant that the lights on the ring indicating level of charge were purely cosmetic and whether or not the ring was fully functioning had no impact on my ability to take and hold a battery charge. I have no reason not to believe that, but here's my conundrum: if my battery is healthy, as I am told, I should still be able to get to an indicated charge level above 75% of the hypothetical mileage range. Conversely, if, as is apparently the case, my Energi won't take anything beyond 75% and an apparent range of 15 miles, then my battery should not test as totally healthy. And if it's not the battery, it seems reasonable to infer that the damaged charging ring is having an impact, despite what my dealer has told me. Anybody on this forum have some insight here? Would be very much appreciated.
Timewellspent Posted September 19, 2018 at 07:15 PM Report Share Posted September 19, 2018 at 07:15 PM Is your charge level display screen showing 75% or are you just basing that off your estimated range of miles? See photo of this one showing 51% (photo grab from Hybridbear) jsamp
jsamp Posted September 19, 2018 at 07:59 PM Report Share Posted September 19, 2018 at 07:59 PM "battery is totally healthy" has been claimed by many a Ford dealer when there is clearly degradation. The light ring being only cosmetic is true, but what % does your center screen say?
murphy Posted September 19, 2018 at 08:25 PM Report Share Posted September 19, 2018 at 08:25 PM I have had the light ring replaced in my 2013 Energi for the second segment being burned out. It is not a very good design. I wouldn't depend on it for anything other than it being a "light show".
jeff_h Posted September 19, 2018 at 09:34 PM Report Share Posted September 19, 2018 at 09:34 PM I agree with all of the above, go by what it shows in MFM to show "fully charged" - or does your car stop charging before the graphic in MFM gets all the way to the top? ChasEhrlich Posted November 19, 2018 at 09:19 AM Report Share Posted November 19, 2018 at 09:19 AM My 2014 CMAX ENRGI had this problem and the dealer diagnosed it as a loose grounding wire between the hybrid battery and the chassis or cooling fan that prevented the battery from being cooled sufficiently and stopping the charge. Separately the charge port light ring assembly failed. Both were fixed under warranty. Timewellspent
