JTG Posted May 7, 2018 at 11:07 PM Report Share Posted May 7, 2018 at 11:07 PM (edited) I bought a '17 SE over the weekend and did my first commute to work today. It's 160 miles round trip and according to the trip odometer I averaged 70mpg with a full charge start and full charge at work. Can this be right?! The tank was near full and now it's a bit above 3/4 so that's less than 3 gallons of gas. I was expecting 45mpg or so. This can't be right can it? Davidoo Posted May 7, 2018 at 11:28 PM Report Share Posted May 7, 2018 at 11:28 PM Yes, it can be right. You drove the first 20+ miles or so when you left your house and when you left work using no gas at all (I think it calculates that at 999.9 mpg). JTG Posted May 8, 2018 at 12:43 AM Author Report Share Posted May 8, 2018 at 12:43 AM I guess that makes sense. The Regen brought it up to about 37 miles leaving 43 for gas. If I knew that I would have bought this car as soon as I started commuting a year ago. Ford needs to do a better job advertising this. bdginmo Posted May 8, 2018 at 03:23 AM Report Share Posted May 8, 2018 at 03:23 AM 160 miles / 70 mpg = 2.3 gallons. Even if the full charge got you 30 miles (that would be near the max possible) that would still be (160 - 30) / 2.3 = 56.5 mpg while in hybrid mode. It's definitely possible. 56 mpg is about the highest I can obtain on the highway going 55-60 mph, but it usually requires mild temperatures 60-70F and avoiding the use of heating or air conditioning. Let's see what happens the next couple of days. Post back with updates.
murphy Posted May 8, 2018 at 10:11 AM Report Share Posted May 8, 2018 at 10:11 AM My car is only used for local driving. From late spring until early fall my engine does not run. All driving is done on electricity only. That means my mpg is infinite during that time. Further I have 10 kW of PV solar panels on the roof of my house so my cost for electricity during that time is zero. It doesn't work in the winter due to the low sun angle and snow preventing what little sun there is from hitting the panels. Ford was in a good place when they introduced the car in 2013. Five years later they increased the nominal range from 21 miles to 25 miles. Now they have announced the Fusion and other sedans will be discontinued so they can focus on trucks and SUVs. Will it help their bottom line? I don't know but I do know that I will never buy an SUV or a truck.
muzicman61 Posted May 8, 2018 at 11:53 AM Report Share Posted May 8, 2018 at 11:53 AM I'd reset your trip and mpg and check again. I do 100 miles round trip 4 days a week and I'm averaging 46mpg.

Still higher than average, but attainable. I guess that makes sense. The Regen brought it up to about 37 miles leaving 43 for gas. If I knew that I would have bought this car as soon as I started commuting a year ago. Ford needs to do a better job advertising this. JTG, You got 37 miles from a charge including regen? Did you use the EV only at lower speeds (non-freeway)? do you drive like a granny? I can get over 30 around town, but never close to 37. I guess since you went into hybrid mode that includes the extra .75kWh from plug-in mode to the middle of hybrid mode, but that should only be an additional 3 miles. You're doing really good. bdginmo
JTG Posted May 10, 2018 at 03:52 PM Author Report Share Posted May 10, 2018 at 03:52 PM Here’s my numbers from yesterday. It looks like I’m closer to 60 than 70mpg. Still a heck of a lot better than I was getting in the V6 accord.
