Indyenergi Posted December 12, 2016 at 02:03 PM Report Share Posted December 12, 2016 at 02:03 PM I saw a picture of a Nissan leaf with the charger mounted under hood and a reel installed so there was just a cord that could pull out from grill and plug in anywhere. This would be ideal for me; I am 18 miles from work, and could plug into one of the outlets there without "unhooking" my charger. Has anyone done this with their Energi? Seems to be a sensible way to have our charger with us at all time

The box that came with the car is an EVSE that provides the safety features to prevent electrocution. There is no voltage on the pins in the J-1772 connector until a handshake between the EVSE and the car is completed. I know the car can't be driven with an energized J-1772 plugged in. It may not be possible to drive the car with a de-energized J-1772 plugged in.
