Daytime Running Lights (DRL) Enabled

Recommended Posts

Almost three years ago my dealer refused to enable my DRLs citing a lack of resources.

Today I turned them on myself.

Tools used:

Laptop Windows 7 computer

A high quality OBD II scanner (OBDLink MX - bluetooth version)

Forscan program version 2.3.0

Free 2 month license key for Forscan special features

I had previously used a relay to activate the front parking lamps anytime the car was on.  They are not very bright and didn't really do the job.  The circuit is still there but I removed the fuse.

Windows FORScan? How do you get the free two month license key? Thanks!

Go to the Forscan web site and register for their forum.  It took a day for my approval.

Connect to the car with Forscan and click the bottom left icon (about??).  This must be done with the computer that you will use.  A hardware ID will be displayed.  Click the button to copy it to the clipboard.  Save it in a txt file.

Log into the forum and read this thread.

http://forscan.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=836

It describes how to get the free key and to insert the key into the software.

I have no idea if this is possible with the android version.

I can't remember the rest, I'll have to set it up again to get the rest of the steps.

Okay, here is the rest.

Once the computer is connected to the device and the device is connected to the car.

Click on the Configuration and Programming icon (looks like a square computer chip)

There will be four items displayed

SOBDMC    Module configuration (AS BUILT format)

PAM            Module configuration (AS BUILT format)

BdyCM        Module configuration (AS BUILT format)

BdyCM        Module configuration

Click on the last one

Click the "Run service procedure" icon at the bottom of the screen

It will read a lot of data and then display two items

Daytime running lights                 Disabled

Electrical system delay time        1 second

Select Daytime running lights

Click "Edit selected" at the bottom of the page

Select Halogen Headlamps and click the check mark box

Click "Write" at the bottom of the page

Click the "Stop service procedure" button at the bottom of the page

That is all.

Unless the Fusion is different, this only works with the 2013. The 2014 does not have the setting in the BCM, so Forscan can't touch it. The 2015 and later have operator menus for DRL.

I find that hard to believe since DRLs are required in Canada.  They are also enabled in fleet cars.  There has to be a way to do it.

They can be set at the factory, but nowhere else. Believe me, I went through it trying to get them enabled. They removed the BCM setting for 2014 only. That is the only year it cannot be turned on.

There is different programming for US and Canadian market cars.  In Canada, the DRLS cannot legally be allowed to be disabled through menus, so the 2015 cars in Canada do not have the option.  I have been told that if you bring the US market car to Canada with the DRLs turned on through a customer accessible menu setting and the inspector is thorough, they will fail the car. I would think the ForScan option on the 2013 models would not be considered customer accessible, and would be acceptable.

I also pretty sure the Canadian market car also do not have the Vehicle Health Report capability

Yes, for Canada I'm sure they disabled the operator option. I know my dealer looked at the menus using their hardware and software, and the option to change it simply wasn't there. Can't be done on the 2014. If you didn't get a US Fleet model or a Canadian model, the 2014 doesn't have DRL. I really want that option, and had not idea it wasn't possible to just turn it on - the 2013 was able to do this, so I thought it was a simple trip to the dealer to enable it. No such luck.

Do you have a link to the thread or can you explain how to activate the front parking lamps anytime the car is on?

I used a double pole double throw 12 volt relay that plugs into an octal socket.

The relay coil is connected to the driver's wiper motor power feed, through an inline fuse, which is hot anytime the car in in ON mode.

I cut the wire to the parking lamp and wired both ends so that when the relay is not energized the connection is made between the wire ends.  Thus the lights work the same as they always did when the ignition is off.

When the ignition is on, and the relay is energized, it provides 12 volts to the wire that comes from the parking lamp.

This does result in DTC error messages stating that the parking light circuit is shorted to 12 volts.  The error messages do not illuminate any telltales on the instrument panel.

I have a hand drawn schematic somewhere.  When I find it I'll scan it and attach to this post.

With this software though, are you able to change which bulb can be ran as your DRL? Say enable that small peanut bulb to run as the DRL instead of going through all the cutting and wiring? And what else can you do with this software besides enabling the DRL?

No, only the Ford designated lights can be enabled, the same as a fleet car in the US or all cars in Canada.  It is the low beam lights running at about 80%.

I would bet the BCM setting is still there on 2014s.  FORScan can do some things that even the dealers IDS software can't do.

I turned on the DRL on the 2010 Fusion Hybrid using FORScan, an option only available of US fleet cars.

That's still 88 watts, at least on my 2013 C-Max Energi. Seems like a waste of energy for something with so little effect on safety. I've bought a pair of LED DRL's, haven't decided whether I want to make the lower front grill modifications needed to install them. At least those are only a few watts.

I don't know. I believe the same dealer software was used to turn on the 2013. It just doesn't work on the 2014. I think they removed the option in favor of factory setting. It may have to do with the Canadian requirement to NOT be able to turn it off.

Can someone with FORScan check to see if the setting is available? I'd be willing to invest in the software if it works.

Forscan worked with my 2013.  I don't have access to any later model years.  Forscan for Windows is free.  You do need a high quality OBD II to bluetooth adapter and a computer that does bluetooth.  An add on license was needed to get to the DRL switch.  They supplied a free two month license which is all I needed.

Well, it would have worked for the 2013 at the dealer as well! Not sure I want to invest on an OBD reader.

Not necessarily a Hybrid or Energi, but a 2014 Fusion owner seems to have done it here.

Windows FORScan software (required to make a change like this) is free.  You just need a OBDII adapter.

Alright so I got some experience with FORScan. You can disable the DRL, and many other functions if you dont have a 2015+.  There are hidden gauges in the instrument cluster such as individual readings for each tire pressure, digital speedometer, and AWD gauges. But unfortunately its only available on the regular gas models. I wrote up my experience here: http://www.2gfusions.net/showthread.php?tid=4320
