Timewellspent Posted January 18, 2016 at 03:58 PM Report Share Posted January 18, 2016 at 03:58 PM I know I have seen this somewhere before in the forums, but I can't seem to locate it. For some reason, my cars outside temp display will just jump to 50 degrees and will stay there until I shut off the car. Like today, it is 9 below zero out and the car was showing the correct temp for awhile, but all off the sudden I look and it says 50. It happened to me around this time last year when I got the car, but then seemed to be fine. If I recall, someone said that the outside senor is located near the lower front grill and I have been using the block heater and wondering if that has something to do with it. Any easy check I can make to see if something is loose? Thanks, DK
Hybridbear Posted January 18, 2016 at 07:11 PM Report Share Posted January 18, 2016 at 07:11 PM (edited) Unfortunately I think you probably have to take it to the dealer. My parents had this issue in their C-Max Energi. The dealer said that the problem was that the sensor connections had water intrusion, causing bad data. In the C-Max the outside temp sensor is in the passenger side mirror. In the Fusion it is behind the front bumper. I know I posted some info about it somewhere, I think on the FFH forum. Thanks Hybridbear. That must be why I can't find it, not this forum. I just have a feeling I'm going to get the "looks like it is working correctly" response. I guess i will just bring it in. Sure is strange that is always goes to 50. Thanks again! -DK

Thanks again! -DKMy parents C-Max also went to 50. It would go to 50 or 128 or -6. Their car also acted up in winter, during the time of the 2014 auto show. I remember driving with my dad downtown for the auto show and not being able to get any heat in the car on a frigid March day because the car thought it was 128 F outside... Their car acted up right after going through the car wash, that was what the dealer said caused the water intrusion. Did you have the issue right after taking your FFE through a high pressure car wash?

Timewellspent Posted January 30, 2018 at 02:32 PM Author Report Share Posted January 30, 2018 at 02:32 PM Bump. I posted over in the FFH Forum as well, but my car continues to have this issue when the temps get cold. It works find during the summer, but as soon as the temps drop the outside temp jumps to 50. Dealer has tried to fix it numerous times, but the problem continues. Anyone else have this issue and know of a fix?
murphy Posted January 30, 2018 at 10:09 PM Report Share Posted January 30, 2018 at 10:09 PM My ancient memory says the connections to the temperature sensor are corroded. Whether or not that is right, I don't know but it's worth a look.
Timewellspent Posted January 31, 2018 at 02:57 AM Author Report Share Posted January 31, 2018 at 02:57 AM They claim they looked at all connections and then added some special grease to help with that, but thanks for the suggestion.

If the connections are corroded they need to be cleaned or replaced. The grease is to keep out water. It can't repair a bad connection. Timewellspent Posted February 1, 2018 at 01:55 PM Author Report Share Posted February 1, 2018 at 01:55 PM Again, they say the looked at the connections and they applied the grease. I would assume if the connections were corroded they would have been cleaned, but no idea. I have left another message asking about this. Thanks for the suggestion. murphy Posted February 1, 2018 at 08:00 PM Report Share Posted February 1, 2018 at 08:00 PM They performed PPT FB diagnostic. (I don't know what those letters stand for.)Apparently it has 5 steps and the YES and NOs are the answers to those steps. It says they replaced the wire and the sensor. Timewellspent Posted February 1, 2018 at 09:17 PM Author Report Share Posted February 1, 2018 at 09:17 PM Thanks Murphy. Just crazy. It only occurs when the outside temps are like 15 degrees and below otherwise it seems to perform as it should. They are waiting to hear back from their online tech center to see where to go from here.
bdginmo Posted February 3, 2018 at 11:42 PM Report Share Posted February 3, 2018 at 11:42 PM Mine did this other day. Apparently 50 is some kind of special no-signal or bad-signal value. In my case this happened when I pulled out of a warm garage and into the cold outside air. It did not correct itself on a on/off power cycle. It was only when the outside temperature warmed to above 30 that it finally started reading correctly again.
zuikiz Posted March 18, 2018 at 10:35 PM Report Share Posted March 18, 2018 at 10:35 PM Me too is having the same problem + a bunch of other electronic issues. All intermittent. The car is 2017 Energi with only 7000k miles. I am not sure it is low ambient temp related. I am in MT and we get subzero temps, but this started happening over the last couple of weeks, when temps are higher.I tried to google it, and it looks like a lot of different Ford models have the same problem, but I was not able to find a solution. Djinoh Posted May 24, 2020 at 05:53 AM Report Share Posted May 24, 2020 at 05:53 AM I know this post is a bit older but mine started doing that today. It would say on my screen one minute it was over 178 outside forever then just drop to 50 and not move when it was actually 81 today. I have a 2019 Fusion with 25000 miles on it and have never had any issues with my 2nd oil change 2/3 weeks ago from the dealer.

jagplates Posted May 19, 2023 at 05:45 PM Report Share Posted May 19, 2023 at 05:45 PM I don't know if this is the same problem, but it is worth a try...I had my car in to the dealer for a recall and when I got it back, the temperature setting for the climate control showed impossible temperatures. I disconnected the 12 volt battery in the trunk, left it for 10 minutes and reconnected it. After that everything was back to normal. It's the equivalent of "unplug it and restart it" for any other computerized device. Always the first thing to try.
