Fuel Range and Mpg do not match??

Hi,

Newbie here.

Owned my 2015 titanium now for 35 days and 4,000 miles.

 

My question is I have been getting 54.6 Mpg steady. (60% 70mph driving, one plugin charge per day)

 

My range should be 764 per 14 gallon tank.

But my fuel gage goes full empty, and range shows 0 at 600+\-.

When I fill the tank it only takes 11.5- 12 gallons.

Leaving about 2 gals avg. Or 109 miles.

Why does it not show this in the calculations or fuel level?

 

Also side note, do all fusion wiper fluid nozzles spray under the wipers?

This is common practice from all of the cars I have driven for some time (BMW, Acura, Nissan, ....). Even though it says empty or zero range, you still have some fuel left in the tank. Some cars will not let the tank go completely dry and shut off (always past the E/range of 0). I have heard that it is harmful to run a tank dry (but never heard anyone of authority back that up), I think it has something to do with running the gas pump empty can cause it to overheat and fail. 

 

Other explanation is that the buffer is there to take some of the anxiety out of trying to find a gas station when that light comes on unexpectedly and you are in the middle of nowhere.

 

Have not paid much attention to my wiper spray, but it seems to work well.

There's a Youtube auto mechanic that I like to watch (Scotty Kilmer) who has a video about why not to run your tank dry (among other bad things you can do to your car).  And yes, it destroys the fuel pump since the fuel acts as a lubricant.  Most pumps you don't want to run dry since it typically destroys them.

Your DTE calculation shows hybrid miles & gas miles. It doesn't know how many times you will charge during the tank so it can only predict your range based on your current fuel in the tank & current charge in the HVB, assuming you're going to drive straight through without stopping. Does that make sense?

My range meter never showed the 4400 miles I went on one tank... The car can only tell you a WAG on how far you will go, so hindsight is the only way to KNOW how far you can go until you have.

 

It gets better in it's guessing, the more you drive, but even on one short trip, you can drive differently, ruining the guess. IE, floor it once and the numbers go off. More data ~ more accuracy.

 

As others have mentioned, it doesn't want you to use 14.5 gallons out of your tank.

Ford vehicles use what is called a Running Average Fue Economy (RAFE) to calculate range. This value is computed periodically based on the mileage recorded. So you will have more range if you drive carefully. They add the electric separately, rather than use MPGe. I'm not quite sure what length of time they use for this value on the FFE. But anyway, that value is used to calculate range. As others have noted, it is range to empty on the guage, not to an empty tank.
