tsarty17 Posted July 2, 2015 at 08:35 AM Report Share Posted July 2, 2015 at 08:35 AM Hey allI recently got a Thule rack and box and my mpg has tanked. My 110 mile commute has me getting 39mpg and I charge both ways. It does go from sea level up 4k foot passes. I also noticed I'm having it revved a lot more than before 5-6k rpm. Anyone else notice this?

rbort Posted July 2, 2015 at 02:46 PM Report Share Posted July 2, 2015 at 02:46 PM Do you need it on there all the time? Can you remove the box until the days you need it and then just put it on? Of course they always tell you to keep stuff off the roof, even Ford does I believe in the tips of how to improve your MPG numbers. -=>Raja. Doug0716 Posted July 2, 2015 at 10:43 PM Report Share Posted July 2, 2015 at 10:43 PM You not only added weight but greatly increased your drag coefficient. You mileage is pretty good for having that on the car.
Timewellspent Posted July 3, 2015 at 03:52 PM Report Share Posted July 3, 2015 at 03:52 PM Not to sound like a smart a$$, but what did you think would happen? Extra weight and the added drag to the airflow are a couple killers. https://social.ford.com/content/fordsocial/en/cmax-infographics/3-tips-to-help-maximize-hybrid-efficiency/_jcr_content/content-par/infographic/infographic_image.img.png/1416614808788.png
tsarty17 Posted July 5, 2015 at 12:00 AM Author Report Share Posted July 5, 2015 at 12:00 AM Well I assumed I'd lose a few but not 10mpg. I'm used to diesels where I can tow 10k pounds and lose 1mpg. Haha.
rbort Posted July 5, 2015 at 12:44 AM Report Share Posted July 5, 2015 at 12:44 AM (edited) ^^^ Exactly what I meant about the Ford tips above, that is the document I saw in the past. -=>Raja. Doug0716 Posted July 5, 2015 at 02:57 PM Report Share Posted July 5, 2015 at 02:57 PM Well I assumed I'd lose a few but not 10mpg.I'm used to diesels where I can tow 10k pounds and lose 1mpg. Haha. You never said what you were getting before, but on ICE only it's not uncommon to lose 5-6MPG with an empty box on vehicles with smaller engines. I wouldn't doubt the other 5MPG-ish is from the loss in electric mode. I would be curious to do the same commute in similiar circumstances (outside temp / ac on or off as it was for the last trip) in pure EV Only mode with and without the box to compare those. tsarty17 Posted July 5, 2015 at 06:04 PM Author Report Share Posted July 5, 2015 at 06:04 PM Before I was avg 50-51. It's 110 mile commute and I charge at both ends.
