Loaner Vehicle?

I experienced the dreaded flashing engine light today as my ICE started bucking. Based on other forums it appears to be a misfire issue. Thankfully I had enough battery left to get to a charging station so I could get to a Ford Dealer. They said they can't even look at it till Friday and they won't offer a loaner unless I have the Ford ESP. Is this the same experience everyone else is having?

This policy varies from dealer to dealer. Try contacting other dealers or send a PM to FordService on this Forum for assistance.

Why would they replace the plugs, they should have plenty of life on them.  It sounds like you need to find a new dealership or mechanic because I certainly wouldn't trust this one :-/

If a coil was bad, I could see that perhaps that plug would need replacing due to misfires, no fires, etc.  I would guess that the other three plugs were replaced "just because" even if they didn't have any misfires.

 

I would definitely argue about the cost of the other 3 plugs after seeing what the price they charged for the coil and the one plug was.

Sure the plug that was on the coil that went bad should be replaced as it may have been the cause of failure for the coil.  But replacing plugs designed for 100K when they have about 25K miles on them seems ridiculous.  The biggest reason to replace all of them is to not have to keep a different maint schedule for different ones.  I would have just left the other 3 and replaced all 4 when the time came (little waste 1 vs a lot of waste on 3). You can usually ask to see the parts that they took out (it's the law where I live that they have to do this), simply requesting this before they do any work will reduce fraudulent claims/quotes.

The price sounds about right for a dealership but I bet a trusted mechanic would have done this for half the price.  The dealership charges by the hour for every part of the job, so if there is overlap then they benefit (3 jobs rated at 0.75 hr each = charge for 2.25 hours). Most trusted mechanics recognize that replacing the spark plugs/wires(when present)/coil have a lot of time overlap and will only charge you for their actual time. Most mechanics around here are about $80/hr (or less) and this is certainly not a 1+ hr job on this vehicle and there's no way those parts cost more than $100 without the dealership markup.

I think that's rubbish.  Tell me, if I remove the spark plugs or coil packs, will the car still go?  No.  Therefore, it is a critical component to make the powertrain function and should be included in the powertrain warranty.

 

Now if MFT decides to fry itself, that would obviously not be covered under powertrain.  It's an accessory.

Here's what the Powertrain Warranty (for the engine) covers:

 

Engine: all internal lubricated parts, cylinder block, cylinder heads, electrical fuel pump, electronic engine control unit, engine mounts, flywheel, injection pump, manifold (exhaust and intake), manifold bolts, oil pan, oil pump, seals and gaskets, thermostat, thermostat housing, timing chain cover, timing chain (gears or belt), turbocharger/ supercharger unit, valve covers, water pump.

 

Funny how it covers all of that, but not coil packs or spark plugs, which is still an integral part of making the ICE run.  Heck, it covers the fuel pump!  How is that any different from a coil pack???

Dug a little more in to the warranty manual, and it seems spark plugs/coil packs fall under an Emissions Warranty.  That one has a weird period - 2 years or 24k miles, unless you're in Cali:

 

The warranty coverage period for: • Passenger cars, light duty trucks (applies to vehicles up to 8,500 pounds GVWR) - 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever occurs first) for catalytic converters, electronic emissions control unit, and onboard emissions diagnostic devices, including the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM). - 2 years or 24,000 miles (whichever occurs first) for all other covered parts (spark plugs are in this list).

 

California has a much better warranty.

Yea, I said the same thing about the plugs (shouldn't they be good for another 80,000 miles?). He said since they were in there anyway, they'd only be charging me for the parts, so why not. I said fine, do it... It's funny, until I saw Russell's note I didn't realize that I may have screwed up my warrantee by moving to Florida last year., I bought my car in NY which follows CARB rules os I had the 150,000 mile warrantee on unique hybrid parts, but now that I've moved to Flordia, my warrantee reverts to the normal 100,000 miles... It's funny too that NY conforms to the CARB rules for everything except the emissions warrantee stuff mentioned above so I would have been screwed back up there as well. I guess if I have an expensive repair on the hybrid parts after the 100,000 I'll have go register my car in California so I can get it repaired under warrantee, lol!

 

There were two parts of the experience I especially found humorous. On the wall in the service department is a sign stating at all parts are covered for 2 years and unlimited miles including labor. I laughed at the girl who was ringing me out as I mentioned that the parts they replaced didn't even last 2 years so I guess I'll be back to take them up on that offer in a year and a half!

 

The next was the service advisor telling me about the customer satisfaction call that I would recieve and that he hopes I would rate him well. He apologiized for not being able to offer me a loaner, and not covering any of my repairs under warrantee and not telling me about the 10% of any service coupon clearly available on thier website (I fouind it myself and used it, no thanks to him). Truth is, when I pressed him on offering a loaner his first question was ESP (no) but his second question was where did you buy it. Clearly if I had bought it there they would have helped me out. I would think he'd want to help me out after I told him I just moved down here and was going to make this my dealer. My wife and I have bought three Fords in the 4 years adn my wife is already looking to turn in her '14 stang on a '15. I definitely won't be making Brandon Ford in Brandon Florida my dealer going forward. Oh well, I'm probably going to move on to the new Volt when it come out anyway so what do I care....
