uniquelyd Posted April 21, 2015 at 07:13 PM Report Share Posted April 21, 2015 at 07:13 PM Does anyone know if the 13 - 15 Fusions will have the ability to upgrade to the new SYNC 3. It seems crazy that ford would not offer the option. Also, I don't really want to go after market because so many of the car's systems are integrated into the factory radio but can anyone offer a good alternative to the built in head unit without the much loss. I love the I'm car but sure most can agree that the head unit sucks.
openair Posted April 21, 2015 at 10:28 PM Report Share Posted April 21, 2015 at 10:28 PM Considering the 13s (and 14s?) don't even have the newest version of sync 2 as on the 15s, I wouldn't hold my breath...
Doug0716 Posted April 21, 2015 at 10:57 PM Report Share Posted April 21, 2015 at 10:57 PM It's a whole new OS with new hardware. They'll probably just claim that it's not compatible (if any statement at all is made) and that will be that. I don't mind the current interface so much, but I would like a better touch screen (and the ability for a passenger to insert addresses while I'm driving!) I got used to MFT and like it, except for the ability to input addresses while moving, as noted above.

There is an after-market unit that will enable you to do that, not cheap. https://www.coastaletech.com/mytouch2.htm
Eric4539 Posted April 22, 2015 at 02:26 AM Report Share Posted April 22, 2015 at 02:26 AM I saw a video with a Ford representative explaining the next generation Sync. He said the new Sync will NOT work retroactively. Like others have said it is an entirely new OS and I think even the screen is new. You'll be able to pinch to zoom with the new system and screen. It's a shame we won't be able to upgrade to the new sstem, but like jeffh I am used to MFT in my 2013 with its quirks and limitations. I'll just buy a Tesla Model S instead!
lonzo71 Posted April 22, 2015 at 01:17 PM Report Share Posted April 22, 2015 at 01:17 PM When I switch from a honda civic hybrid to the ford fusion hybrid years ago, that is when I knew I had to settle with the OS it came with. Ford doesnt update sync very often and never has offer the newest to the older cars and they wouldnt because it would hurt sales
FordIVTteam Posted April 22, 2015 at 02:37 PM Report Share Posted April 22, 2015 at 02:37 PM Hi everyone, I just want to jump in and verify that the current SYNC systems will not be able to upgrade to SYNC 3 due to it being all-new hardware and software. Also, we do not plan on offering an aftermarket kit for SYNC 3 at this time. Rebecca

FordIVTteam Posted April 23, 2015 at 01:07 AM Report Share Posted April 23, 2015 at 01:07 AM Will there be any update for the current Sync? maybe to add features, fix bugs, ect? Hey lonzo71, We still plan to release updates for our current owners as needed; however, I'm unable to speculate what those future updates might include. If a new software version becomes available for your VIN, it will appear on your account at: Owner.Ford.com Kim lonzo71
expresspotato Posted April 27, 2015 at 02:45 PM Report Share Posted April 27, 2015 at 02:45 PM Wonder if you can just repace the DIN (touch / computer module). The interface to the car might be the same. Who knows.
shaggy314 Posted May 13, 2015 at 06:25 PM Report Share Posted May 13, 2015 at 06:25 PM It's likely not worth the effort to retro it. The 2015 update wound up removing a nice feature of keeping track of lifetime numbers (iirc), so we may or may not be better off. I would be shocked to ever see another update, we are a small market so baring a critical bug, they are busy with newer and better. It's not the expensive, modular system of Tesla... I'm happy the spontaneous reboots and black screen for backup cam are gone. I still shocked that at $995, the navigation doesn't come with a couple of updates... but I'm not bitter. I see the updates on ebay for $50.

On my Acura I bought an update 2 years later that still did not include major road improvements that were there when I bought my car. Makes no sense given the price they charge but can not keep it up to date. Now, the Ford system might be different. I would still check to be certain though.
