flyingcheesehead Posted February 12, 2015 at 07:07 PM Report Share Posted February 12, 2015 at 07:07 PM What are you all paying to charge away from home in places where there's not a free outlet? I love the quiet ride in EV mode, but it seems like the few charging stations that are available around here are horrendously expensive. I see prices around here like $2 to plug in plus $2/hr. That means a full charge would cost around $7, which is roughly equivalent to spending $14/gal on gas! Anything where a full charge costs me more than about $1.10, I might as well be burning gas, with prices where they are today. If I can't get a full charge for the cost of half a gallon of gas, there's not much point. I have *never* seen a charging station that even comes close to being worthwhile financially. Is it this way everywhere?
Doug0716 Posted February 13, 2015 at 01:22 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2015 at 01:22 AM (edited) These chargers aren't meant for us. They're meant for the people that have pure EVs and larger onboard chargers. I don't even look up chargers when I'm not at home anymore. openair Posted February 13, 2015 at 01:40 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2015 at 01:40 AM Most of the few we do have here in Ontario are free and I use them when I can. You're right though that it isn't worth paying $2 and never use them. The pricing for these is based around what most BEV's would draw. hankanddara Posted February 15, 2015 at 05:15 PM Report Share Posted February 15, 2015 at 05:15 PM I'm on the Central Coast of California, and I've yet to find a charger that isn't free.I've found chargers in grocery store parking lots, shopping malls, Target, Home Depot, and city-owned parking garages. The vast majority of the are Clipper Creek; you plug it in, there's a loud 'thunk' from the box, and you're off and charging. I wonder if these units are subsidized by the state air quality commission, or just good PR for the businesses?
Hybridbear Posted February 15, 2015 at 05:22 PM Report Share Posted February 15, 2015 at 05:22 PM We've never paid to use a public charger. I have my PlugShare filters set to only show free stations so I don't even know where the pay stations are located.
shaggy314 Posted February 19, 2015 at 03:41 AM Report Share Posted February 19, 2015 at 03:41 AM In Austin, TX we have some 150ish ChargePoint chargers that are $25 for 6 months unlimited from the city utility. You'd think all the PHEV and BEV would advertise that fact... I'm getting solar panels within the next month, so with the ongoing credits from that, it'll cover the $25 fee too...
