The last time I did this, I hooked it up to the connections under the hood and when I returned the battery was dead. I sometimes have trouble getting the battery charger clips to stay connected to the positive terminal. When you were out of town were you using the app to check on the car? When the app accesses the car there is a momentary spike load on the battery that is in excess of 10 amps. I use a standard battery charger that has an automatic maintenance mode so that if the battery needs more than a trickle it can take care of it. It may keep the 12 V battery charged, if the car happens to wake up for some reason and decides to charge the 12 V battery. It is not guaranteed though. Remote starting the car using the MFM app while plugged in shouldn't drain the battery or start the ICE (depending on your remote start settings) and remote starting DOES turn on the DCDC converter to charge the 12V battery.
