HotLap Posted December 12, 2014 at 11:06 PM Report Share Posted December 12, 2014 at 11:06 PM I know this has been discussed before so I won't drag everyone through the details, but am looking for creative solutions that I can do myself. I'm very hesitant to have my LFD replace my headliner and am not confident that Ford has fixed the issue and won't just send a new headliner with the same issue. What I'm trying to do is just prevent the seam from fraying/coming up over time. Since it's not readily noticeable I don't mind it looking that way, but am concerned that it will eventually begin to fray, etc. Couple of thoughts I've had are: 1) Get an interior "glue" that I can brush along the front edge of the fabric sealing it better,2) find a matching material measure/cut to fit right over the frayed edge (and wrap around the edge of the headliner) and glue in place... Any other suggestions/thoughts on a remedy for this? T.I.A!
meyersnole Posted December 13, 2014 at 06:58 AM Report Share Posted December 13, 2014 at 06:58 AM I had my headliner replaced under warranty, and now wish I had not. I have heard the roof creek a few times, and while this one is not currently showing frays I think you are right... there is nothing fundamentally different about this one that gives me confidence that it won't fray again over time (just a poor design). There are some places where the fit is not as good as it was... but I don't want to have them mess with it anymore. Some of it is better, some now is not quite right. What it really needed was some type of molding between the liner and the glass.
GregKet1 Posted December 13, 2014 at 07:11 AM Report Share Posted December 13, 2014 at 07:11 AM I had my headliner replaced. The new one is now frayed worse than the original. Yes, it is still made the same way of just hacking through the material when the cut the headliner to size. What I'm going to do is carefully paint the edge with clear nail polish making sure to only get the cut edge. Then, after it dries, I'm going to snip the tips of the frayed areas back. It won't be perfect but it will be better and will stop further fraying. Gk
jeff_h Posted December 13, 2014 at 01:03 PM Report Share Posted December 13, 2014 at 01:03 PM I've had my dealer run some glue over the front edge of the headliner, on the right side a few inches from the A-pillar (however there are other places where some fraying is also showing) It's tough to see the fraying anyway and I only wanted to keep it from getting worse - after reading various owner stories here and on the hybrid forum, no way I wanted to try and get the whole thing replaced and maybe make it worse than before - especially since it's tough to notice anyway. Hey guys, If you do decide to head to your dealer for this, give me a heads up. :) I'll check out some additional assistance. HotLap Posted December 19, 2014 at 10:58 PM Author Report Share Posted December 19, 2014 at 10:58 PM Thank you Megan always good to know you are willing to assist! What needs to happen is for Ford to realize this is not an isolated issue and reengineer the headliner. At least for the next model year and then offer the reengineered part to existing customers. It generally takes a lot of warranty claims for this to happen, probably not on their radar yet. For now, I'm with the rest of the guys above (sometimes the cure is worse than the cause) and will try a home remedy (i.e glue) to just keep it from getting worse over time. I hadn't thought of clear nail polish, but IIRC that will stop a run so it just might work for the headliner fabric! Thanks all for your suggestions and thanks again Megan for volunteering to get involved.
