kungfuman Posted October 16, 2014 at 04:46 AM Report Share Posted October 16, 2014 at 04:46 AM Hi, I was wondering if anyone had already tapped 12v power out of the rear view mirror assembly. I have the drivers assist package (lanekeeping) and rain sensing wipers, if that matters. I need to install a dashcam and prefer to pull the 12v power from there rather than a horrible cable routing all the way around the dash. I know these aren't speed demons but I figure someone might have installed a hardwired radar detector or other device...
GregKet1 Posted October 16, 2014 at 07:12 PM Report Share Posted October 16, 2014 at 07:12 PM (edited) I just installed a dashcam last weekend. Going around really isn't all that bad: The front edge of the headliner isn't attached so there is already an empty slot there. Then I just used a coin to move the rubber out so I could put the cable behind it going down the A-pillar. Then across under the dash and held it in a couple of spots with Gorilla Tape. All in all, I think I took 15 minutes to run it all the way to the plug in the center console and you can't see it anywhere. meyersnole Posted May 3, 2015 at 02:40 AM Report Share Posted May 3, 2015 at 02:40 AM Did you ever figure it out? I would follow GregKet1's advice, run it around to the fuses. If you tap into the mirror then you just gave Ford an out if anything goes wrong with any of those expensive systems tied into the wiring behind the mirror. shaggy314 Posted May 13, 2015 at 04:47 PM Report Share Posted May 13, 2015 at 04:47 PM (edited) Yeah, something that dies when the car does (dome lights?), don't want a phantom load to kill your 12vt system. Annnnd removable in case you need to for warranty work. Not SAYING they would disallow, but not worth the risk. Fat Fusion Posted May 14, 2015 at 01:23 AM Report Share Posted May 14, 2015 at 01:23 AM Plenty of late model Mustang guys tap into the mirror for either the Homelink or radar detectors. Shouldn't be a problem.
