zippoking Posted August 25, 2014 at 07:27 PM Report Share Posted August 25, 2014 at 07:27 PM Has anyone tried to charge an Energi with the Volt or Leaf L1 charger that come with those cars? I recently tried a Volt charger from a 2011 model. On those you can select the charge rate on the charger itself and both the 12A and 8A settings didn't work on my Fusion. I was even more curios if anyone has tried a Leaf charger as those seem to be the cheapest option on Ebay for buying a second portable charger. Dan's Energi Posted September 1, 2014 at 02:51 AM Report Share Posted September 1, 2014 at 02:51 AM Odd, it should have worked fine. Did it work with the Volt?
zippoking Posted September 2, 2014 at 02:01 PM Author Report Share Posted September 2, 2014 at 02:01 PM The Volt charger worked fine with the Volt, although for some reason he was also having issues with the 12A setting, so he used the 8A just fine. But I had no issues with the same outlet and the Ford charger at 12A. Maybe the Volt one has a way to detect Voltage drop and it is just something specific to this circumstance. Just generally curious if others have had success with other OEM chargers.
shaggy314 Posted September 2, 2014 at 02:48 PM Report Share Posted September 2, 2014 at 02:48 PM The idea of the J1772 port is that it is required to negotiate the charge so they SHOULD be interchangeable. The cars with faster chargers should get the faster charge, they should not try to blow out our slow chargers. People are sad that my household one is 3.3 kWh (20 Amp 240) as that's all I needed. That said Leafs may and Teslas do have a different connector at the car.

The leaf has a J1772 with a CHAdeMO for DC charging.http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/27/Nissan_Leaf_Charging_Sockets_2012-04-01.jpg The Tesla does not have a J1772 but does have an adapter available to use one. Dan's Energi Posted September 18, 2014 at 06:30 PM Report Share Posted September 18, 2014 at 06:30 PM According to a dealer they've seen a few of the Volt chargers (the ones with orange cords) having problems.
