Hardp Posted May 2, 2014 at 05:41 PM Report Share Posted May 2, 2014 at 05:41 PM I know that the manual says that you cannot use an extension cord for the 110 v charger but what about a heavy duty extension cord?
murphy Posted May 2, 2014 at 05:45 PM Report Share Posted May 2, 2014 at 05:45 PM I have used a 50 foot 10 gauge extension cord with no problem. I think the warning is there because most people that have extension cords laying around have 16 gauge wire in them.
Russael Posted May 2, 2014 at 06:07 PM Report Share Posted May 2, 2014 at 06:07 PM I have a 50 foot 12 gauge cord which works with no problem as well. The 16 gauge wire extension cords Murphy is referring to are the typical orange outdoor cords that individuals use for their lawn care tools. Hardp Posted May 2, 2014 at 06:12 PM Author Report Share Posted May 2, 2014 at 06:12 PM Thanks for the quick replies. And, especially for pointing out that I need a 12 gauge not a 16 guage - which is what I figured would suffice.
Fat Fusion Posted May 3, 2014 at 12:51 AM Report Share Posted May 3, 2014 at 12:51 AM Also... don't let the cable get "insulated" by anything and don't let it coil against itself. The reason they caution you against using an extension cord is the heat that is generated due to the resistance from distance. Keep it free from itself and other objects and you should be fine. I used one for several months until I put in my 240V charger.
murphy Posted May 3, 2014 at 09:57 AM Report Share Posted May 3, 2014 at 09:57 AM The energy lost in heating the extension cord means the voltage at the charger is lower than it should be so it will take longer to charge the battery. That's why I went with a 10 gauge extension cord.
ctwomey Posted May 11, 2014 at 02:52 AM Report Share Posted May 11, 2014 at 02:52 AM for the record, a 14 gauge six footer stopped working after several months...shifting to 12 gauge now...
Russael Posted May 11, 2014 at 03:22 AM Report Share Posted May 11, 2014 at 03:22 AM What happened with it? Did it actually melt or did something go wrong with the contacts? A 6' cord at 14 gauge should've been OK but at the limit... A 50' at 12 gauge is also rated at 15A due to the length.
ctwomey Posted May 12, 2014 at 09:19 PM Report Share Posted May 12, 2014 at 09:19 PM It just stopped working. No visible damage. I'd checked its temp once or twice, and it never felt hot. But I probably didn't check at the end of a charging cycle...
