dnorris78 Posted April 30, 2014 at 11:50 PM Report Share Posted April 30, 2014 at 11:50 PM Does anyone have any experience with charging at hotels? I have 2 long trips coming up and I will be staying multiple days at the same hotel. Has anyone been allowed to charge with a 120v outlet? How do you win the "it takes too much electricity" argument ?
jeff_h Posted May 1, 2014 at 12:17 AM Report Share Posted May 1, 2014 at 12:17 AM I drove to VA Beach in March and saw that there was a 120v outlet, just told the manager at the desk that I wanted to see if I could plug in to charge my car... he asked "Oh it's an EV?" and I said yes it's a plug-in hybrid, he said sure no problem. The only concern I had was that someone would swipe the L1 charger since it was sitting out in a hotel parking lot, but it was fine. For someone that says it takes too much electricity, if they mean cost-wise you can point out that the cost would be under a dollar and offer them a dollar - but if they mean that it takes too much juice and would overload the circuit since there are already parking lights or vending machines/ice makers etc on the same circuit, well then that would pretty much stop things right there. smokewagon Posted May 1, 2014 at 09:40 PM Report Share Posted May 1, 2014 at 09:40 PM At the newer chain hotels its hard to find outlets, but older ones I have used outlets, I even ran the LI cord into the room, plugged in and left the door open and watched a Dirty Harry movie. Some guy walked by and asked if I needed a "jump", I said no thanks ! I assumed he was talking about the car...creepy. No more open door charging. smoke
shaggy314 Posted May 5, 2014 at 07:45 PM Report Share Posted May 5, 2014 at 07:45 PM I've looped it through the steering wheel with the window cracked open only enough for the cord to pass through... turns it into a smash the window activity. CombsAuthor Posted May 6, 2014 at 12:22 AM Report Share Posted May 6, 2014 at 12:22 AM Great topic. You can also check on Plug Share to see if there is a hotel with a charger along your way. Some will advertise an available outlet that you can use. BTW - That was a funny post Smokewagon, I was expecting you to say, "Go ahead...make my day." dnorris78 Posted May 6, 2014 at 10:18 AM Author Report Share Posted May 6, 2014 at 10:18 AM We stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. The nice manager allowed me to plug in to the 120 v outlet at the rear of the hotel. It worked out nicely. When I received the text I went out and removed the charger. After I stayed at the hotel referenced above I posted a positive review online for the hotel since they were accommodating - if the rest of your stay went well, you may want to do the same since they were accommodating for you too. smokewagon
