vett93 Posted April 7, 2014 at 04:23 AM Report Share Posted April 7, 2014 at 04:23 AM Is it safe to leave a USB thumb drive in the car? Does the car cut power to the USB slots so they won't drain the battery?
Kybuck Posted April 7, 2014 at 05:39 AM Report Share Posted April 7, 2014 at 05:39 AM I haven't verified if the USB slot is powered off (which could easily be tested with a phone charger), but it's safe to say the power consumption of a USB device that is plugged in (but not actively in read or write mode) is not going to drain the battery. bjorn Posted April 7, 2014 at 06:01 AM Report Share Posted April 7, 2014 at 06:01 AM The USB port is powered when the car is turned off. I find that really useful as I can leave a cell phone plugged in to charge when leaving the car.
larryh Posted April 7, 2014 at 10:36 AM Report Share Posted April 7, 2014 at 10:36 AM If you leave a USB thumb drive in the USB port, watch the LED to indicate activity. I think that you will find that the light will flash at anytime, even when the car is turned off and has been off for a while.
shaggy314 Posted April 14, 2014 at 06:56 PM Report Share Posted April 14, 2014 at 06:56 PM I've left a 64 GB flash drive connected to USB#1 in my car for the last 9 months or so... everything dies about 15 minutes after you push stop on the car. This goes double for when I've left my phone plugged in to the USB port #2, it doesn't get a full charge when I get back, nor does it have a dead battery.
