CA HOV sticker program status

Perhaps Fat Fusion was referring to the indirect costs of the program such as adding congestion to the HOV lanes.

Actually, I was referring to the $$$ spent on rebates to PHEV/EV buyers.  And, I was calling the author of the article a moron directly, and to a lesser extent those who read such nonsense and believe it to be true.  In typical political fashion, the sheeple are expected to believe that the HUGE sums of taxpayer dollars being shelled out to the upper middle class, aren't related to the number of stickers being issued.  That's all.  Personally, I'd like to see it spent on teachers instead- despite not being a parent.  How many hundreds of teachers could be hired instead of trying to get the pollution reduction when we're already way out on the tail end of the curve in that regard?

I still haven't seen ANYONE answer the questions I posed regarding the maximum # of stickers that SHOULD be released, etc.  Meanwhile 101 goes to gridlock and stop and go in the HOV lane at 3:01PM M-F in Santa Clara.

Motor on.

Have to agree with Fat, but really, we all know what will happen in the end, the HOV will have to be limited to the number of people in each car, that or do what others states have done and turn them into HOT lanes.  There is no such thing as a  " no taxpayer cost ". Who pays for those stickers? Who pays the person that receives the request and mails them out, ect...Nothing is free in life...

It costs $8 for the life of the sticker...  They're making $10's of dollars off of this program

yes, its 8 bucks for the life of the sticker, but if they keep adding cars, they are making more money and flooding the HOV system to the brink...thats why I said what I said :)

but tell me, how is the enforcement of the HOV? Maryland sucks at it, they dont do it enough and I doubt many get the max, which is 500 bucks and a point

Enforcement is terrible in Los Angeles, which is part of the problem with overcrowding in the HOV lanes. I think I see more single drivers without stickers than I do multiple passengers or cars with stickers. Once in a great while, you get lucky to see a CHP motorcycle patrol catch an illegal HOV driver, but it's very rare. And people cross the double yellow lines all the time without getting caught, unless it causes an accident. California has resisted installing cameras on the HOV lanes, but has them all over the Fast Track toll lanes (and you do get tickets in the mail if you try to flaunt the toll lanes). As a result, the toll lanes are rarely congested while the HOV lanes are a mess. Still, having the green stickers usually saves me time on the particular routes I tend to take. It's a nice perk for buying a qualified PHEV. (However, every time I see a Prius Plug-in I get a bit annoyed since that car's EV-only range is about 7 miles per charge! I don't know how that model qualified when it doesn't even come close to the Energi or Volt.)

Odd that CA does that, Maryland doesnt and I used to know VA didnt either, but that could  have changed..

CA charges 8 bucks...lol...no wonder they keep extending it..so glad I never lived there...

Holy cow!  There's a person that hasn't moved to CA?  Seriously, it's crazy how crowded the cities are now.  When I grew up in the "Valley of the Heart's Delight" there were open spaces, fruit tree orchards, and as a kid it was fine to walk up the street with my shotgun.

Just ribbin' you a little.  Just seems like I'm the only native Californian left.  At work, in a company of over 12k people, no more than about 10% were "Born in the U.S.A." let alone CA.   :drop:

Yeah, CA charges 8 bucks each, so revenue is $120k.  But the fuzzy math of the idiot politicians in a bankrupt state will cause them to dole out $22.5 million in rebates.   :spend:

Who'd want to? ;) Its bad enough being near DC area (its like a third world country) and living in Maryland that wants to be like CA. Counting the days to 16.5 years till retirement!

Drove to DC last week and was disappointed that even though I had 3 people in my (PHEV) car I could not enter anymore. This is because they pretty much turned the HOV lanes into pay lanes -- you need a hybrid EZ pass to use them. You need 3+ people plus the transmitter or pay to use the lanes an amount that moves based on how much traffic. I noticed this trend the last time I was out in LA on the way back to the airport. Not sure if they required the EZ Pass though if you had enough people in the car.

If this trend continues, how many stickers issued may be a moot point.
