mczajka Posted March 11, 2014 at 12:26 PM Report Share Posted March 11, 2014 at 12:26 PM When I pull the car into the garage, power off, and get out. There is a sound from the engine compartment, like the electric motor is winding down, then I hear a high pitched sound at the end. Is this anything to worry about? I'll try to record and post sometime. dnorris78
Russael Posted March 11, 2014 at 12:30 PM Report Share Posted March 11, 2014 at 12:30 PM If it's a sound that lasts about 2 - 3 seconds, it's most likely the active grill shutters either opening or closing. I sometimes hear that when turning the car on and pulling out of the garage. As far as a very high pitched sound... I'm usually REALLY sensitive to sounds like that (I can hear CFLs sometimes... old tube TVs that are on but not displaying anything... ultrasonic bug busters... those are the worst) but I haven't detected anything like that from the car. meyersnole

Yes I heard this once (if it's the same sound) about 2 weeks ago, sounded really strange like some crazy spaceship blip at the end - but each of my past/present hybrids has made strange sounds now and then as the systems go through their actions (the Prius used to make a lot of strange noises), so unless some warning light goes off I don't get too excited about it. I recommend stopping by your dealer to have them take a listen. If they're unable to get to the bottom of this, let me know and I'll lend a hand. :) Ashley
vett93 Posted March 12, 2014 at 08:02 PM Report Share Posted March 12, 2014 at 08:02 PM Why don't you record the sound and so we can hear it as well?
dnorris78 Posted March 13, 2014 at 01:47 AM Report Share Posted March 13, 2014 at 01:47 AM The sound could be the electric parking brake.
mczajka Posted May 9, 2014 at 12:08 PM Author Report Share Posted May 9, 2014 at 12:08 PM Sorry I haven't been monitoring this in a while. I think it's more of a thing when I pull into the garage with the engine running, and shut the car off. If I think about it, I will try to record it. But it doesn't happen all the time. JeffPrice Posted May 25, 2014 at 11:19 PM Report Share Posted May 25, 2014 at 11:19 PM Mine does that all the time. I think it is the shutters or a fan winding down. I think of it as the shuttle has landed system shutting down
Russael Posted May 26, 2014 at 02:43 PM Report Share Posted May 26, 2014 at 02:43 PM Could be the fuel pump... when that's running, it has a very high pitched sound.
rodthomas Posted May 28, 2014 at 07:22 AM Report Share Posted May 28, 2014 at 07:22 AM Whats really crazy is I had 15 miles on my car after i purchased (last week) and I was standing outside the car while the car was running, and I had a weird almost TRON noise whining coming (high piched alternating freq) from the car... the only thing i can compare it to is when the first time i saw a Fiskar Karma electric sitting at a stop light.. very strange un-explainable sound.. almost thought something was wrong.. I have not heard it since and I now have 250 miles on the car..
EnergiCCAATS Posted May 28, 2014 at 02:02 PM Report Share Posted May 28, 2014 at 02:02 PM I have noticed that the electric a/c compressor and condenser fans when running by themselves (without the ICE on) sound very weird and "TRON-Y".
