Impact of PHEV on Electric Bill - 2008-Now

I was curious about how charging the Fusion was impacting my electric bill, so I pulled my monthly electric bills since 2008 and did a comparison.  I have only had the Fusion since 8/2013, so I only compared those 7 months.  Interestly enough my bill only increased  $8.63/month on average over the 7 months.

It costs me on average less than 3¢ per mile to drive on electricity whether in the Energi or the Focus Electric.  It costs me 7.5¢ per mile to drive the Energi in hybrid mode at current gas prices.  My F-150 is another matter, about 22¢ per mile around town and 17¢ per mile on the highway.

The impact on our electric bill of our two cars driving all or mostly on electricity is small in comparison with what we were spending on gas for a Honda Odyssey and an F-150.

We used to spend more than $7,000 a year on gasoline. With a couple of long trips in the Energi planned for this year and a lot of running back and forth to the Home Depot and the Garden Center in the F-150 included, I expect that our cost for electricity and gas for all three vehicles will be less than $2,000 for the year.  The difference covers more than half of what we are making in car payments on two new cars.

My bill is up about $30 a month; a dollar a day isn't that bad for two full charges and one partial (about 30 minute) charge.

I'm lucky enough to be able to charge for free at work.  I work 27 miles (each way) from home, so I burn one charge going to work, and another full charge going home.

I've had my Fusion PHEV for 10 months and 4700 miles. I've estimated it costs me 4 cents a mile

to drive on electricity and 8.5 cents a mile on gasoline.

Also my monthly electric bill seems to average about $8 more a month.
