Neil Posted February 24, 2014 at 04:11 PM Report Share Posted February 24, 2014 at 04:11 PM It was time for the first Oil Change, tire rotation and VA Safety Inspection for my 2013 Fusion Energi. I typically change my own oil because I like to know that it is done correctly, and it's less expensive. I usually get whatever synthetic oil/filter package on sale at Autozone or Advanced Auto, and it typically costs about $35. I did a search on this board to see if there was anything I needed to be aware of before doing the oil change and I saw that I would have to remove an undercarriage plate (9 hex head bolts, I believe). That sounded like a hassle, but I dealt with the same issue on my 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid, so I was not concerned. But.... I also saw about Ford's 'The Works' oil change package which was on-sale for only $29 (after rebate) and it used a Synthetic Blend oil - plus did a tire rotation. Clearly a win-win for me since it was cheaper, and included the tire rotation, which is always a pain-in-the-@$$ to do at home - especially without a spare tire. As an extra 'bonus' there was a coupon for a free safety inspection (a $19 value!). I also needed to have the Go-Time issue fixed, so I figured as long as it need to go to the dealer, I might as well have them do it all. I called and made an appointment to have the Go times fixed and 'The Works' done. I also mentioned the TSB for the FCIM and said they may want to look at applying it, since it seems to fix the problem for the Go-Times. So I get to the dealership at my appointed time, and the 'Service manager' assigned to me asks what a 'Go Time' is. He then proceeds to tell me he is the Service manager for Commercial Diesel Fleet customers and knows nothing about gas cars, much less EV. Someone comes by and tells him to update the Sync software and he asks 'what's that'? Apparently they didn't have any EV certified mechanics on duty. Someone else hands him a flashdrive and says to use that. He takes the flash drive and says, 'What's this thing?' Clearly the -Go-Times did not get fixed. So... the receipt lists 6 quarts of oil (and charged me an extra $3.65 because 'The Works' only includes 5), but my manual says it only takes 4.5 quarts. It lists the Oil Filter part number as 'BE8Z 6731 AB'. My manual says to use FL.910.S. At least they had it on a charger when I picked it up. Anyone have any insight on the extra oil charge or the strange Oil Filter part number. Also, $3.65 seems cheap for a Synthetic Blend oil. Do they even make a 5w20 that is not synthetic? Gigi Posted February 24, 2014 at 04:54 PM Report Share Posted February 24, 2014 at 04:54 PM If one of the Ford Service people on this forum does not respond to you here shortly, as I expect they will, send Ashley a PM and she will find out what is happening at your dealer. I would be concerned too. (You can just do a search for "Ashley" on the forum and find her.) The one time I have had Gigi at the dealer for service, I talked with a service representative who has training on hybrid/energi/EVs and who clearly knows what he was doing and appreciates these cars. Whenever I call the dealer in the future, this is who I will talk to.
jeff_h Posted February 24, 2014 at 05:02 PM Report Share Posted February 24, 2014 at 05:02 PM For the oil filter, it's compatible with the FL-910 based on this lookup: http://www.oilfilter-crossreference.com/convert/FORD/BE8Z-6731-AB For the Go times, come down south a bit and make an appt with my dealer (Purvis), when I took my car in for the Go times I had a copy of the TSB printed out (not required but I wanted to help ensure it would get fixed) with the instructions to reprogram the FCIM with IDS version xyz or later, and the EV/Hybrid tech did that and also applied another TSB as the system had stored a fault code that was addressed by a different TSB, so he was thorough enough to check and make sure that stored codes other than the customer's concern were also addressed. And it's a small nuisance to remove that cover on the bottom of the engine when changing the oil, but I've found that it sure helps keep the underside much cleaner. My estimate is that it takes about 18-20 minutes from start to finish to pull onto the ramps into the garage and back off of them.
Neil Posted February 24, 2014 at 05:16 PM Author Report Share Posted February 24, 2014 at 05:16 PM Yes I gave them the TSB number, emailed a soft copy to them, and left a hard copy on the front seat. ...they said they updated my Sync instead, I just checked and it was already up-to-date (as of November when I did it myself) so they didn't do anything to the sync - thank goodness! What has me a little concerned is they have over filled my oil - from what I can tell, the regular EcoBoost 2.0l takes 5.7 quarts but the Energi's Atkinson 2.0l takes 4.5 quarts. According to the receipt they put in 6 quarts (and charged me for the 6th).

A couple changes ago I put in the entire 5-qt bottle by mistake (my 2010 FFH took 5 qts and after doing dozens of changes on that car it got to be quite the habit so I used all 5 as per the routine) but the dipstick only showed it slightly overfilled so I let it go and it was fine. However if they really put 6 qts in there that is a bigger issue and I'd either ask them to make it right or do it myself since I wouldn't want them touching the car again.
