dsinaik Posted January 24, 2014 at 05:34 PM Report Share Posted January 24, 2014 at 05:34 PM I'm thinking about buying a 2014 Energi. There seem to be pluses and minuses...The 20+ Miles per charge of EV driving looks fantastic. The trunk is clearly a limitation. The technology looks great, though from what I have read, it looks like there are a lot of complaints with the reliability of the onboard computer system (to the point where a lawsuit has been filed against Ford). How bad is this problem for owners? Have the problems been resolved by the most recent update? Are they persisting? Has Ford been responsive in resolving complaints? Thanks in advance for your responses....
jeff_h Posted January 24, 2014 at 06:24 PM Report Share Posted January 24, 2014 at 06:24 PM though from what I have read, it looks like there are a lot of complaints with the reliability of the onboard computer system (to the point where a lawsuit has been filed against Ford). Can you provide more info on this one? I am not familiar with this. IIRC, there were lawsuits filed regarding MPG ratings on the CMax and Fusion Hybrids, however the EPA testing protocol was followed correctly from what I know -- the CMax has since lowered their rating and sent checks to owners, but the Fusion Hybrids did not change anything. So if it is something different than that issue (which was not related to the Energi models), I don't know of any such claims regarding "reliability of the onboard computer system." Gigi Posted January 24, 2014 at 06:36 PM Report Share Posted January 24, 2014 at 06:36 PM I've had a 2013 Fusion Energi for two months and between my wife and I, we have put on over 3,500 miles. We have had no computer related problems. Updating to the latest version of the software was a little touchy, but this was resolved with nothing more complicated than deleting and repairing the phones. The only computer system related complaint I had was that the Sync webpage was not picking up the fact that I had updated the operating system. A PM to a helpful tech took care of that. The trunk space is fine for groceries and for luggage for 2 or 3 people. If 4 people take luggage, they had better pack light - 4 carry ons and not much more. More than 90% of our use of the car is commuting and driving around town for shopping etc. For us, the trunk is not a big issue. I am very happy with our Energi and am happy to recommend it. jeff_h Posted January 24, 2014 at 11:16 PM Report Share Posted January 24, 2014 at 11:16 PM Thank you both. Love to hear any other perspectives... Jeff_h...here's a link to the lawsuit... http://m.autoblog.com/2013/07/16/preposed-class-action-lawsuit-targets-defective-myford-touch/ Oh OK, yep many were not happy with the earlier versions of MFT and I believe that drove a lot of bad survey ratings for owners and Ford suffered from it. Now I'm pretty used to MFT and when I go back to my old 2010 with all the buttons it takes a minute to think back to where everything is. However the date on that article was July 15th, which is when Sync 3.5.1 and prior were the system of record (and I also experience a few bugs), in early August Sync 3.6.2 was released and that definitely improved things. So if MFT is your concern, go to a dealer and play with the system a bit and see what you think - and do a search here on this site for 'MFT' or 'Sync' and see what you find, I think you'll see most are much happier with the latest version. Eric4539 Posted January 25, 2014 at 12:42 AM Report Share Posted January 25, 2014 at 12:42 AM I have never owned the first model year of a new vehicle so I was a little nervous to buy a 2013 Energi. There is so much technology in this car that I wondered what might go wrong. I can tell you that I have experienced the minor technical glitches; sagging trunk (because I have the spoiler and my build date is prior to 5/2/13), loss of one touch up power window operation (because my build date is prior to 4/30/13), and Go Times not working. All were fixed with TSB’s; none of them recurred. I could be wrong but I think the lawsuit you read might be for earlier versions. I have read many complaints about MyFord Touch crashing or freezing and I thought the 2013 model year hass a new and improved MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch. I might just be lucky but I have not had any problems with my unit either by touch or by voice. I don’t know if the 2014 Energi has been “fixed” over the 2013’s but everyone on this forum that has a 2013 has upgraded to the latest version of Sync. You can keep track of any updates via the Syncmyride website. Or the very helpful friends on this forum keep us all informed of updates, changes, improvements and helpful tips. Like you, I asked a lot of questions on this forum prior to me deciding to buy the car. Everyone answered my questions honestly and the support from this forum provided the confidence that I needed to make the purchase. And I knew more about the car than many of the sales people did; I was well educated! My local dealer has been very nice to me and they are actually learning from the information that I provide to them. They only recently became Energi certified so I was their first customer having TSB’s specific to the Energi performed there. I bought my car from a dealer in San Diego - that salesman there was very knowledgable about the Energi. I absolutely love my car and I have not regretted buying it for one second. The little technical issues are so minor to me. The bigger issue for me was whether or not I wanted to spend this much money for the Energi. But you know what? It’s only money, and I can’t take it with me! :) jeff_h
FusionDad Posted January 25, 2014 at 04:35 PM Report Share Posted January 25, 2014 at 04:35 PM This is a great car. Son and I bought it together on Memorial Day weekend in 2013, took it together on a 7,000 mile cross-country trip this Summmer, and Son moved himself and all his gear from Northern Virginia to Louisville Kentucky using just the Fusion Energi, a buddy and a Thule roof box (the largest one) - gear that included his huge flat screen TV. Apart from weirdo Ford infotainment electronics, this is a fool-proof midsize car with a fantastic gas mileage, solid driving behavior, high comfort and good reliability. The more you plug in the better it gets. I strongly recommend it.
shaggy314 Posted January 26, 2014 at 06:17 AM Report Share Posted January 26, 2014 at 06:17 AM (edited) There is an app that lets you play with MFT by the way... look on the iTunes store if you have an iOS device. I just crossed 10k in mine today. It's a great car. I've only over flowed the trunk once, but I have a back seat. I did keep my old hatchback for long and dirty items. I have bouts of obsessively plotting charging locations, and letting it go since I have a silly huge gas tank. Fortunately Austin is very accommodating in both cases. I will be jealous of the 4k discount Ford gave you as of the last week of December... P.S. going for my 5th gas tank tomorrow, in 7 months.
