Floor Air Vents

Anyone out there getting any heat from the floor vents? When I close off everything BUT the floor vents and turn on fan to max absolutely no airflow can be felt in that area. Is that just my observation or has anyone else had that problem?

 

I'm all for getting the most out of EV usage, but here in Chicago with single digit temps using heat is a no brainer. I just hope I haven't just purchased a car that won't warm your feet in these temps.

 

Also as everyone else has observed, winter totally sucks the life out of the battery. This should be disclosed to the buying public as it all but makes the MPGe claims a total fabrication. Don't get me wrong. I have enjoyed my car but I could have saved a few thousand dollars by buying the hybrid instead of the Energi.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

 

I have plenty of heat come from the front floor vents.  I never checked the back seat since I don't sit back there and hardly anybody does.  If you're not getting ANY airflow by your feet, then one of the duct doors may be stuck.  Also check to see if recirculate is turned on.  I don't believe that would obstruct airflow to your feet, but it's something to check out.

 

Cold weather reduces the performance of all batteries.  Even my truck turns over more slowly when starting in cold weather.  Lead acid batteries are rated as CCA, or Cold Cranking Amps.  That shows what kind of performance you can expect from that battery when it's cold.  AA batteries do not perform as well in cold weather (say for your MP3 player or a digital camera) and they won't last as long as they will in warm weather.

 

The EPA has to produce a number that fits all cars nationally.  Someone in AZ is going to get different fuel economy numbers in comparison to someone in Maine.  They have publicized that the Fusion Energi gets an average of 21 miles per charge.  As it stands right now for me, I received mileage estimates (without climate) around 32 in the summer, and with the onset of winter, around 17.  That averages out to 24.5 miles per charge as an average, and exceeds the estimate.  However, my commute is all 40MPH or less on surface streets.  That commute doesn't fit what everybody else gets.  If you do travel at a higher rate of speed, say, 50MPH, then your range will be lower.  There are people on the forum here who have a commute that is at 35MPH or less and they get an even greater range estimate.

 

On the Ford Fusion Hybrid Forum, they get a long thread started every year around October when the weather starts getting cold of substantial mileage decreases.  The engine has to warm up, the batteries need warmth to perform at their best, and if you do short commutes with the car, the mileage is downright bad.  The Fusion Energi outperforms the Hybrid by a lot for shorter commutes, so I feel that you made a good choice (after all, I'm biased) :).  With all the incentives the Fusion Energi gets over the Hybrid, there's maybe only a few thousand dollars difference between the two, and you reap the benefit of being able to drive those first 10 - 20 miles gas free.

 

If you haven't yet taken advantage of your Go Times, definitely set those up.  If you have a routine schedule, your car will be automatically 'started' every day and will be ready for your departure at your set time.  This doesn't require any gas or energy from the battery itself - it takes it all straight from your power company, leaving you with a full battery and tank of gas and a warmer car.  However, if you're using your 120v charge cord, the performance of that is... substandard.  It'll work, but it won't give you the Bahamas when it's time for you to leave.

Can you point me to where the air duct is exactly so I can see if it is 'stuck'? Also, I have tried using Go Times, and like many others on the Forum, mine do not work properly so I usually set an alarm on my phone 15 minutes before I want to leave and just remote start it.

It isn't something you'll be able to see.  It's inside the ductwork, buried behind your center console and inside the dashboard.  If you don't have any airflow at your feet from the floor vent itself (little grid lines on the side of the center console by your pedals), then it's most likely a stuck 'door' behind the vents themselves.  It's an insanely expensive repair due to just labor.  Got to love warranty work. :)

 

When you take your car in for that repair, there is a software update to make Go Times work.  http://www.fordfusionenergiforum.com/topic/1248-collection-of-tsbs-related-to-energi/?p=9574 will point you to the needed update.  Don't be surprised if the dealership gives you blank looks, but if you give them that, they will get it patched and they should work properly.

You could try setting the climate controls to vent air only to the floor to prevent the air from being directed to all the other vents.  You should be able to feel the warm air blowing from the vent near the front of the center console.  In my car, it doesn't seem to blow very strongly when the other vents are active.

The floor vents are horrible when mixed with any other mode. Today, I remote started the car and let it run for 15 minutes. During my 13 mile drive to work I had it on the dash vents and floor and couldn't feel anything coming out the floor vent.... Or feel my toes because they were so cold. My 2014 Fusion with the 2.0L EB would get so hot I had shut the heat off.
