mikenmar Posted December 6, 2013 at 04:20 AM Report Share Posted December 6, 2013 at 04:20 AM (edited) So I was headed home on 880N in the fast lane when I get a flat tire. Luckily, I managed to get the car across five lanes of traffic to the shoulder without killing anyone. Then I go to get the spare out of the trunk, and... D'OH! No such thing in this car... I try the compressor/sealer kit, but it's useless. The air flows out of the tire just as fast as it goes in. Oh, but there's "complimentary" roadside service! So I call and get a tow, only to discover that the only place they'll tow it to for free is a nearby Ford dealership... where they want $220 to replace ONE TIRE.... D'OH!! Complimentary, my ass... Lesson learned. How many of you have purchased a spare tire and jack? Where do you stow it? Russael Posted December 6, 2013 at 04:43 AM Report Share Posted December 6, 2013 at 04:43 AM I keep a tire plug kit, pliers, and an air compressor with me in all of my vehicles in case of punctures. My truck conditioned me to be that way (I had no less than 12 plugs in 1 tire, 6 in another, and no less than 3 in the other 2). I kept a plug kit in my Escort and Focus when I had them and they got used several times as well. My Expedition does have a full size spare tire but it's never seen road surface. The only time that'd be good is if I have a total blowout and destroy the tire. I expect to put the plug kit to use with the car at some point in the not too distant future. :) robertlane and FusionDad
Fat Fusion Posted December 6, 2013 at 05:26 AM Report Share Posted December 6, 2013 at 05:26 AM I'm kinda surprised you didn't know there is not a spare tire. Have you looked at how small the trunk is? I like my 200 mile tow AAA plan. It's about $125/year and well worth it.
mikenmar Posted December 6, 2013 at 07:13 PM Author Report Share Posted December 6, 2013 at 07:13 PM (edited) Yeah, I'm an idiot. I figured there was a donut under the floor of the trunk, but I should have known better. Thanks for the tip on the plug kit -- I'm going to order one right now. I don't know what I would have done if I'd been out in the middle of the sticks or someplace w/o cell service. frbill Posted December 6, 2013 at 07:23 PM Report Share Posted December 6, 2013 at 07:23 PM We'll I am hunting for a compact spare for Stig. I have very little ability when it comes automotive stuff. That is why I have auto services through my Ins. Company. My dealership is checking local salvage yards to see if they can find a compatible wheel. Even if I have to keep it in the back seat it will be well worth it for my peace of mind. More info when I get it. Peace, Fr. Bill
robertlane Posted December 6, 2013 at 09:46 PM Report Share Posted December 6, 2013 at 09:46 PM Don't feel bad - Shelby Mustangs don't have them either, although, there is a place for theme since Mustangs do. I've since learned to purchase a wheel/tire to wobble myself home just in case in happens, yes, again.

I don't know what I would have done if I'd been out in the middle of the sticks or someplace w/o cell service. Plug kits are available at any retail store that has an automotive section. They come with a reamer, the plug insertion tool, usually 6 sticky plugs, and some come with a small tube of glue. Around here, they're not more than 12 bucks. :) You can also get plug 'refills' that don't come with the tools for cheap. Since the car comes with an air compressor, you're all set in that department... just don't use the fix-a-flat setting on it. You WILL need a set of pliers too, not only to remove the object, but also to get those sticky plugs in the stupid tool. :)
hawkeye Posted December 7, 2013 at 05:57 PM Report Share Posted December 7, 2013 at 05:57 PM I have been driving for almost 30 years now and never had a flat tire. Naturally, now that I have a car with no spare tire I got a flat. Completely my fault though, hit the curb and it blew a hole in the sidewall. I do like the plug idea though. I think I will have to get one and hope that if it happens again, between the plug and compressor I will be covered.
murphy Posted December 7, 2013 at 07:30 PM Report Share Posted December 7, 2013 at 07:30 PM I have a plug kit, a can of flat fix that does NOT destroy the TPMS sensor, a jack, and a tool box. I got the jack because of previous experience with plug kits. It is much easier for me to put a plug in a tire when the tire is not mounted on the car. The plug can be difficult to insert and I need to be able to use my full body weight in the process.
frbill Posted December 21, 2013 at 09:35 PM Report Share Posted December 21, 2013 at 09:35 PM Well my dealership found a compact spare. It was $100 plus tax. It fit in the trunk and I am very pleased to have it  ! I am not sure what car they got the tire from but they assured me it would fit my FFE. Fat Fusion Posted December 21, 2013 at 11:39 PM Report Share Posted December 21, 2013 at 11:39 PM Do you have a jack and lug wrench to go along with it? I haven't even looked to see if we get one since we don't get a spare.
frbill Posted December 22, 2013 at 12:11 AM Report Share Posted December 22, 2013 at 12:11 AM I will just call roadside to do the fix. I have no ability to do a tire change.
