sjb Posted October 22, 2013 at 06:34 AM Report Share Posted October 22, 2013 at 06:34 AM This is probably a dumb question, and I'm probably overthinking it, but is there anything I should do to optimize charging when I live near the top of a hill? It seems wasteful to charge the battery fully when I could regenerate some energy just by rolling down the hill. Is there a good way to stop the electric charging at a particular level that isn't 100%? Thanks! Griff
murphy Posted October 22, 2013 at 10:33 AM Report Share Posted October 22, 2013 at 10:33 AM None that I know of. How big could the hill be in Florida? Sounds like it would be more trouble than it is worth. Now if the hill was Pikes Peak that would be a different story. ;)
wxdude Posted October 22, 2013 at 05:12 PM Report Share Posted October 22, 2013 at 05:12 PM I have hooked up my scangauge II and watched the charging rates for driving in L (Maximum engine breaking mode). I see around 50 amps going into the battery when fully off the accelerator. Depending on the grade and length that could be a fair amount of electrons you could build up. Would the end of drive info show if you only charged the battery...and how much it was charged? For instance would you be able to start the car at the top of the hill, with less than a full charge, then stop at the bottom and shut it down and it show you how many Kw's you charged? Might be worth a try to see if it would.
Griff Posted November 17, 2013 at 03:04 PM Report Share Posted November 17, 2013 at 03:04 PM Too bad you don't live in a colder environment. You cold use the downhill energy generation to run the heater in the morning with minimal hit to your overall mileage.
Dabu Posted December 1, 2013 at 06:01 PM Report Share Posted December 1, 2013 at 06:01 PM I have the same problem. With my Leaf, I charge to 80% only so that I can recupe some of that energy, but I don't think there is an easy or automatic way to charge less than full on the Ford Fusion Energi.
