Fat Fusion Posted October 20, 2013 at 12:29 AM Report Share Posted October 20, 2013 at 12:29 AM Guys, Who has had their free charger installed through the CA program? Did the charger have a dryer type plug on it, or did it need to be hard wired in? Also, who has mounted theirs outside, and did you post mount, wall mount, or box mount it? I'm leaning towards having a box with a door mounted to the outside wall right by or under my breaker panel. I'd mount the charger inside of that so it'd be out of the elements when not in use. Thanks! Andy
SD Diver Posted October 20, 2013 at 01:05 AM Report Share Posted October 20, 2013 at 01:05 AM I have one of the free ones. On 9/11, there were 22 of the original 600 left. It is hard wired in. My only cost was for the permit - $260. I believe that even that is tax deductable. Here's what I have:
Fat Fusion Posted October 20, 2013 at 01:09 AM Author Report Share Posted October 20, 2013 at 01:09 AM Cool thanks! Does the plug have to be sitting there in the cradle? I suspect not, but want to have everything figured out before proceeding. Do you believe the spec sheet that says it could be mounted outside on a post? Does it look really rain proof? SD Diver Posted October 20, 2013 at 01:19 AM Report Share Posted October 20, 2013 at 01:19 AM No, I usually have the plug draped over an unused stationary bike (my bad). The model is EVSE-RS. You can download the manuals at:http://evsolutions.avinc.com/products/at_home Hey - hope your "code" errors get resolved soon! Wish I had gotten my stickers as quickly as you did. Had to wait 4 weeks to get the plates/registration, sent off the form 2 weeks ago, and my check has yet to be cashed...
Fat Fusion Posted October 20, 2013 at 01:38 AM Author Report Share Posted October 20, 2013 at 01:38 AM I was lucky my dealer ordered the stickers before I bought the car. So do you think the charger is really rain proof? Do the buttons look rain proof to you?
SD Diver Posted October 20, 2013 at 08:18 PM Report Share Posted October 20, 2013 at 08:18 PM (edited) Hard to tell about the buttons. However, I have never had to use them since MFM starts and stops the charging based upon rules that you set up (mine is set to charge from midnight to 5 am). To charge immediately, I just press charge now on the touch screen. Page 55 of the manual (link in previous post) states" The Charging Dock is designed for a permanently wired installation indoors in a garage or outdoors (in a carport or on a pedestal). While the Charging Dock is designed to be weatherproof, the customer may wish to consider adding personal protection from wet weather for his/her convenience. So, you should be good to go. If the buttons were really a concern, you could always just cover them with something like clear 2" packing tape... Fat Fusion Posted October 22, 2013 at 01:33 AM Author Report Share Posted October 22, 2013 at 01:33 AM Thanks Diver. However we've made the decision to pass on the free charger. I know it's crazy, but the house is 75 years old and has extensive work that may not be up to code. To have an inspector come by would be opening the door to potentially much more than the value of the charger in upgrades to the electrical system. I may or may not add a L2 charger on my own. My rates are mostly at $0.13/kwh so it'd be a long return on investment I think. The ability to fast charge is what I'd really be wanting. I think as more and more cars are built, the price of the new chargers will come down and some used ones will make it to the market.

jza80 Posted October 25, 2013 at 10:27 PM Report Share Posted October 25, 2013 at 10:27 PM Generally there are only chargers available for the first 10-12 days of the month - there is an allotment each month and when they are gone you have to wait until they replenish the monthly allotment which occurs on the first Tuesday of each month. This is a great program if it works for you. The main drawback for me is that the L2 charger provided is the model with a 15 foot cord - and you cannot upgrade to the 25 foot cord model even if you pay the difference. For me, 15 feet is about 2 feet too short.

You should realize the codes are they to help prevent fires... so maybe the inspection isn't a bad thing. Heck they might even find out you are ok and think of the peace of mind and resale value of the house. Per the above post, it's all moot.
