easyv Posted September 23, 2013 at 02:29 AM Report Share Posted September 23, 2013 at 02:29 AM According to http://www.ford.com/technology/, only the Edge, Escape, Focus, C-Max, and Taurus have the active grill shutters. I looked up my vin on ETIS, and it has them listed on my Fusion under " Minor Features" Has anyone examined their grill to determine if the Fusion, indeed, has AGS? I swear every other week I find out about a new feature on this car. A couple of weeks ago, noticed the rain sensing windshield wipers, wich wasn't on the sticker.... easyv Posted September 23, 2013 at 02:36 AM Author Report Share Posted September 23, 2013 at 02:36 AM According to http://blog.ford.ca/2012/05/10/building-a-best-seller-from-the-ground-up/, looks like the Fusion, does indeed have them. I'll have to take a look under the hood tomorrow
murphy Posted September 23, 2013 at 10:34 AM Report Share Posted September 23, 2013 at 10:34 AM That list is inaccurate. It says there is a standard electric starter motor. The Energi and Hybrid do not have starter motors. It is a European web site. The Fusion is not sold in Europe. It should only be used to get the actual build date. tangozulu Posted October 13, 2013 at 11:45 PM Report Share Posted October 13, 2013 at 11:45 PM Hi I am new. I have 1200 miles on my Energi. It says 89 mpge on the dash. My commute is now the best part of my work day. I can see the grill shutters. They are closed when parked. I wonder when they open? Perhaps I should mount a video camera somehow and see. Russael Posted October 14, 2013 at 10:58 AM Report Share Posted October 14, 2013 at 10:58 AM Hello and welcome to the forum. :) For me, my grille shutters are open while parked and the car is off, but I can hear the little motor close them when I turn the car on and prepare to leave. They should open and close on-demand, or when additional airflow to the radiator/A/C condenser is required. I used to believe that they only closed while at highway speeds. tangozulu
FusionDad Posted November 11, 2013 at 05:59 AM Report Share Posted November 11, 2013 at 05:59 AM The active grill shutters are an excellent feature for any plug-in car. This is because plug-in cars that are PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric vehicles i.e. cars that have both an electric motor and a gasoline engine) have gasoline engines which are designed to operate on the Atkinson cycle, instead of the usual Otto cycle. In cold weather, these carss' gas engines run considerably cooler than optimal. Active grill shutters help to compensate for the heat loss in cold weather, keeping the gasoline engine at optimal temperatures. Otherwise, cold weather can really drop PHEVs' mileage. We have a Fusion Energi and a 2012 Prius Plug-In, and the Prius doesn't have active grill shutters. As a result, many many Prius owners partially block their cars' grilles with neoprene pipe insulating tubes for the Winter season to mitigate this seasonal mileage drop (see the PriusChat blog for many discussion threads on this issue). The Energi's active shutter system makes that grill blocking needless. Hoo-ah for smart Ford engineering! tangozulu
larryh Posted November 11, 2013 at 10:03 AM Report Share Posted November 11, 2013 at 10:03 AM (edited) I think the active grill shutters only close when traveling more the 62 mph to reduce aerodynamic drag (at least for the 2013 model year). Unfortunately, they don't open/close based on engine or outside temperature. A programming change was made for the Fusion Hybrid to make the shutter operation more intelligent based on temperature. I don't know if that has been incorporated into the Fusion Energi yet. Edited November 11, 2013 at 10:29 AM by larryh tangozulu
Cody Permann Posted October 25, 2014 at 03:44 PM Report Share Posted October 25, 2014 at 03:44 PM (edited) Looks like this thread has been silent for about two years but I'll pulse it just in case. I just purchased a new 2015 FFE and was curious if the active grill shutters on the energi are all up to date now. I live in cold SE Idaho where we spend a few months of the year with temps ranging from -10 to 20 degrees fahrenheit. Having those shutters closed on my morning commute will be important to minimize engine run time. Thanks! larryh Posted October 25, 2014 at 04:48 PM Report Share Posted October 25, 2014 at 04:48 PM The active grill shutters open and close based on coolant temperature. Hybridbear

When driving with the ICE they'll usually open when the ICE shuts off temporarily since the hot coolant rises and makes the sensor open them. They begin to open when the coolant reaches 200F. They also appear to open when you put the car in park if you've been driving in hybrid mode. larryh
shaggy314 Posted November 3, 2014 at 08:27 PM Report Share Posted November 3, 2014 at 08:27 PM Observed, how the heck are you doing that? Do you make your poor child climb out on the hood or drive past them on the highway? Sorry I was laughing when I typed that... I never hear them open or close so I'm curious how one can tell, short of calling the guy in the car in front of you. I thought we Energi's were only based on speed (as noted above), didn't think we ever got a temperature option.
