Important climate finding

So when I was driving today it was warm between 78 and 91 degrees outside.  I preconditioned my car to 65 and then turned it up to 76.  While I was driving the climate never dropped below the first bar.

 

On another trip today I also preconditioned the car and then set the temperature to 77 (it was 78 outside but it was humid so I wanted to run the AC).  The climate system showed it was using 1 and 1/2 bars, up to two bars.  The air was cool there was no reason for this high energy usage.

 

So I then turned the AC down to 71 and the energy usage dropped immediately to less than 1/2 bar.  From all of this I can only assume the heater was turned on to warm the temperature because the AC is so efficient.

 

**I usually have the AC set to 72 and it almost always uses only 1/2 bar.

When the climate is set to auto it will do whatever is necessary to maintain the set temperature.

Back in April when I was testing preconditioning, when it was cold outside, I set the temperature to 72.

The heating process oveshot the set temperature so it then fired up the air conditioner to bring the temperature back down.

I probably would never have known if I wasn't monitoring the process to see how it worked.

 

I found I have to set the GO time to 15 minutes before I want to leave for the heat cycle to complete on time.

My question is how to make sure the A/C doesn't come on unless I press the A/C button below the display screen. The reason for this is because it has finally started to be in the 70s here and I don't want the A/C to come on unless I ask it to.

 

I went into the Climate settings and manually turned off the A/C button there but it would still start the A/C the next time I hit Climate. I don't know what I did recently but it seems to have finally turned the A/C off. But I want to know what I should do if the A/C starts to automatically come on even when I don't need it. Right now I just like to have the fan on to draw in the nice outside air.

 

Show I not press Climate at all? The Settings function (gear icon below display screen) doesn't appear to address Climate at all. Thanks.

An easy way is to use Manual Mode.  This allows you to use the A/C manually.

 

To get to Manual Mode:

 

1)  Press the Vent button (arrow to face) on the touch screen.  This takes you out of Auto mode. 

 

Once out of Auto mode, you use the A/C button on the panel or the touch screen to turn the A/C on/off  manually.

 

The system will stay in Manual Mode, even when restarting the car, until you select Auto Mode.    The fan will always be in Auto mode after starting the car until you press the fan button.

Thanks, Energized. The only problem I can see here is that I have often hit the "Auto" button by mistake when I meant to hit the "radio on/off" button on/below the touch screen. When this happens, I've discovered that I can hit the "reduce fan speed" button and it turns the "Auto" button off, but not sure if this will change/over-ride your instructions. I haven't been in the car since I got your post.

I don't see any way to get just Vent on my 2013 Fusion Energi Ti. I say Climate.....Vent and it says Opening Climate Panel. When I try any combination of buttons, I always see my EV miles go from like 27 to 20.

Press the button with the arrow to the face on the touchscreen, that puts the airflow thru the Vents / Panel. The voice controls recognize Vent and Panel as the same function.

 

If the outside temp is lower than the temp you have set in the HVAC system, the heater may turn on. If the electric heater turns on, your predicted range goes down.

 

The only way to prevent that is to decrease the temp to LO , or by voice command: "Climate 59 degrees"

Same for me - weather is finally getting cool in Houston but it seems all of the combinations I try I still get the 7 or so mile decrease in my battery

Check the gauge to the left of the speedo for electric draw from your Climate system. Your electric heater is most likely on with a high draw.

 

If you prefer range over heat, you can turn the climate system off and just use the seat heaters which are more efficient.

 

Also, if you plan to use your ICE during the trip, you may want to consider using the engine at the beginning of the trip rather than at the end and using the "free" heat that comes from the engine. 

 

Once the engine has warmed up, it retains enough residual heat that you can go to EV Now and still have "free" heat even with the engine not running.
