2013 Cabin Air Filter Replacement

This video created by user Darthsnipe on BOF -- was done on a 1.6L Fusion, though it *probably* would also be the same procedure for the Energi, but not sure.

 

He says it is his first video and I think it's a great job for doing the job AND holding the camera too... would have been so much easier with an assistant running the camera.

 

The only suggestion I have is one from experience, which is when taking off the trim pieces and setting them aside, don't just set them on the ground outside the door as it makes it too easy to step on them by mistake -- so better to set them out of the way (like in the back seat) where it would reduce chances of getting stepped on.

I don't see the purpose of changing this so often..

 

If someone wants to spend their time and money to replace it every 10k, well they are welcome to spend their own time and money to do so.  I went to change my engine air filter at 15k and it was still like new so I put it back in and am holding offf until 25k.

 

Personally, I have 23k and am about to change my cabin air filter for the first time - and like the above example with the engine air filter, will take a look at the condition and decide the interval I want based on my own driving conditions.

Hey Jeff let us know how your filter is when you pull it out at 23k.

Changed my cabin filter at 10,300 miles on my '13 Fusion Energi.  Thanks for the video link.  The instructions from the video are the same for the Fusion Energi and made it a relatively simple job.  No trim stick needed, just be careful.  Use the 7mm socket for all screws and you won't need to worry about removing the wrong screws.  Attached are a few pics comparing the new and old filter after 1 year.  Judge for yourself if you think it needs changed or not.  The air from the vents was beginning to have a foul odor when first turned on so I figured the cabin filter needed changed.  A comparison pic below is of the removed filter and new filter before installing.  Also a close-up of the old filter shows all the dirt, bugs, grass, etc. collected by the cabin filter.

With the thread bump I figured well I better give this a try since the weather was nice, reviewed the youtube clip again and noted the steps on a piece of paper and went to work and replaced the filter on both cars. Mine has 21,700 miles with mostly highway driving, and hers has 21,100 miles with almost all in the 'burbs.  I didn't keep exact track on how long it took to replace, but started the iPod and finished my car halfway through the 4th song, and then hers after just 2 songs - so it is pretty quick when you know what to look for (thanks to that youtube clip).  Here is how they looked after 21k of use:

Is that a scheduled maintenance item? Ie. every so many miles. I got a 3/36k plan when I got the car as a compensation for an issue.

 

Where you swapping yours for an issue or just figured it was due?

 

I already had 2 spare filters on the shelf in the garage, I buy a bunch of items from rockauto.com to pay for shipping once, then grab them off the shelf when needed.  And since it was a nice day and the OP bumped this thread I figured well why not go for it so I don't have to mess with it when the weather isn't as nice.

 

Looking at the 2013 Owner's Manual, page 443 (3rd Printing) says to 'inspect cabin air filter' - "at every oil change interval as indicated by the information display", well the only way to inspect it is to remove the trim and the glove box, so might as well replace it unless it still looks in really good condition (the FP-71 filter is currently listed as $11.87 on rockauto).  But then on the next page it says to replace every 20,000 miles.  Then later in the 'extensive idling / commercial use / dusty condition' sections it just states "inspect frequently, service as required"

 

Plus I was curious as to how gunked up it might be on either car.

Here is another video that was just posted and is just under 10 minutes and is very good.

 

Great video.  The small bolt on the left underside of the glove box is a PITA.  Hard to find and difficult to get the small bolt back in because of the location.  I used Scotch tape to hold the bolt to my 7mm socket and extension.

 

That one bolt took longer than the rest of the procedure.

 

Turns out that after 23,000+ miles I didn't need to change the filter.

Awesome video. I just replaced mine in an Energi 2018 and there are no screws to secure the filter, it's now plastic tabs. Everythingnelsenos the same. I had a literal "dead" smell when the AC went on this week. I have 28k on the odometer and the filter needed to be replaced, not because of the smell. The manual says to replace a 32k. I had a mouse somehow get into the intake ?. I had to use a shop vac and a small hose for suction to get it out.

Its not like you are using the Car AC as much as your home AC and half the time I don't even use the AC while I'm driving.

 

You obviously don't live in Arizona! ?  114 degrees yesterday.
