dlb92 Posted August 22, 2013 at 04:48 AM Report Share Posted August 22, 2013 at 04:48 AM Sometimes I have to go places where I need gas for a few miles. What I have been experimenting with is accelerating with the battery only mode since electric is so much more efficient and then maintaining high speeds (>50mph) with gas, saving electric for lower speeds and stop and go travel. It seems when accelerating with gas it just wastes so much your MPG goes down to like 5mpg while accelerating like you are driving a RAM truck. What does everyone think? larryh Posted August 22, 2013 at 07:53 AM Report Share Posted August 22, 2013 at 07:53 AM Acceleration also uses a lot of power from the battery too. As power increases the relative advantage in efficiency of the electric motor over the ICE decreases. I would let the ICE do the hard work and reserve EV mode for low power operation. Russael Posted August 22, 2013 at 11:13 AM Report Share Posted August 22, 2013 at 11:13 AM Another suggestion is to use the navigation system's ECO route (if you have the nav system). I tested it when I drove out about 12 miles one way using the shortest route, which got me something like 150mpge, and then used ECO route on the way back which put me in the 190's. I kind of wonder if it counts the number of intersections you need to pass through and tries to find the route with the least (to prevent stop and go) as well as average speed. You can also read up a bit on what hypermilers do with their cars to extend range and fuel efficiency.
Griff Posted August 22, 2013 at 03:05 PM Report Share Posted August 22, 2013 at 03:05 PM Sometimes I have to go places where I need gas for a few miles. It seems when accelerating with gas it just wastes so much your MPG goes down to like 5mpg while accelerating like you are driving a RAM truck. What does everyone think?I'm going to suggest you test it out and see what works for you. My methods of conserving fuel go against what others are saying, but I keep finding I am averaging 90+ MPGe on 35 mile trips while travelling 60+ MPH for 22 miles of the trip. I use electric for the majority of my highway driving. I use the ACC when n the highway. This results in me getting 24-27 miles out of the big battery. I'm guessing it has to do with battery regen during coasting. I then spend my last miles of driving in stop and go. My stop and starts seem to always be in the electric side of the hybrid mode. I then get up to speed (30-50mph) while in gas mode. This refills the hybrid battery and occasionally puts the vehicle back in the electric mode. I think, if you leave it in EV later while driving on the highway you waste opportunities for the battery to increase your electric range with regen miles. Just my opinion. YMMV (Your mileage may vary) Andre07
