Nothing but problems with USB/Sync

I have ~60 gb of music (.m4a and .mp3) in the root directory of a 128 gb flash drive (2.0 speed).  First time I inserted, it took ~5 hours to index.  About a week later, it started indexing again, but I wasn't going on a road trip any time soon, so I had to keep stopping it in the middle (I never removed flash drive).  After some searching, some indicated that creating a playlist file (.m3u) of all the music and placing it in the root directory helps, so I did this with VLC player.  Same issue, hours to index, then after a week or 2 it starts indexing again.

(separate issue)

When it is indexed, and I used "USB, play artist XX," it takes almost a minute (no music playing) before it gathers those songs and starts playing.  Very annoying.  I thought that after it is "indexed" this should happen a lot faster.

Any suggestions?

I want to love this SYNC system, but this is starting to nag at me.

In the end, while it was workable the system was noticably slower. I ened up just going with a 32G thumb drive and ensuring that it was its tags were formed properly as described in that second post. In my opinon there are a ton of really nice things that ar 75% complete. Hopefully Ford continues to fix these issues. I also think the system could have used more RAM and processor for the way the implemented this code. No one optimizes anymore... it works.. ship it! UGgghhhh!

If the system doesn't finish indexing, or takes forever, it usually means there are tags that are incomplete or messed up.

Have you run SyncMyiTunes and looked for errors?

I fixed all the tagging errors on mine and the system is very responsive.

I did run SyncMyiTunes on all my music before trying anything.  They are all now named with a number to start.

Do you think its an issue with the size of my flash drive, or size of library? I have about 9,000 songs for about 58 gb.

The only reason this perturbs me a bit is a removed them all from their sorted file structures (that made navigation a breeze) so that Sync could work...and it doesn't.

I had about 8,400 song in my library.

My guess is that there some pretty poor programming going here. Combine that with the limited ram and cpu and performance is poor. I am pretty sure that having that all loaded slowed down the entire system. I now have a subset on usb drive, but do not use it very often.

I've read where Ford says up to 100GB devices are supported but I've seen plenty of examples of people successfully using larger devices than that. The limiting factor is more likely the 15,000 grammar article limit.  A grammar article is a distinct song name, artist, genre or an album.    At 9000 songs you might be getting close to the 15,000 article limit when considering albums and artists.  My understanding is if you reach the grammar article limit, you would lose or limit the ability to sort by track, but you would still retain the ability to track by album, genre artist (assuming those total <15,000).

As a test, I would start with a subset of your music and see if the performance increases.
