How does the car communicate with ford?

I'm wondering how the car communicates with ford?  Does it have some sort of cell phone signal?  At first I thought it was my home wifi but then I realized i can control car where ever I am and where ever the car is through my phone app. I'm amazed I don't have to pay for it.

On second thought, I set up the car so its connected with my home wifi.  What is the purpose of that and what can you use it for?

It is a cellular signal. And its part of the SYNC package.

Ford has this to say about SYNC

Your complimentary subscription* will remain active 36 months from the vehicle sales date. You must renew your subscription every year at no charge to continue using these services. When it's time to renew, we'll remind you of this both in your vehicle and when you log on to support.ford.com.

Yeah... I asked that in another thread. I think it is pretty worthless.

Ford describes it as a good way to create a hotspot from your phone to other devices in the car. Hmmm if you phone is broadcasting a hotspot, why do I need the car to do it??

Having said that, I set it up in my car... because, well, I could!

Well think of the possibilities--this car has everything it needs.  I'm sure as the years go by they will improve the software and functionality of the voice response.  Soon maybe we will be able to have "conversations" with our Fusion.

If they activate a 4G cell signal imagination is the only limit to what the car will be able to do.

Maybe one day they will activate it so it can drive itself.

If you get the right AV cord you could Skype using the screen in the car while you are driving, how awesome is that.

The WiFi network is potentially useful even without cellular data service if, for example, you have a couple of kids who want to play a game that requires them to communicate with each other.  It essentially creates an intranet within the car.  I haven't tried this, BTW, but see no reason why it would not work.

Sure.... but couldnt you just use the 2 computers in ad hoc mode?  Again, confused by this feature. I guess if you could only connect to your network through a USB cable, then ok...
