I also still have my Nokia 6190 "grey brick" phone. It's iconic, though I can't get the battery to hold a charge.

 

Like everything heavily technology focused, the '13 Fusion Energi will be iconic, yet quaint.. we're going to laugh at the 21 mile range.

 

Speaking of which, as tech improves, the only think that would make me want to keep it long term is a retrofit kit for a longer range battery pack.

Hi, dlb92. Your comment really struck a cord with me. I have had my 2013 Fusion Energi for over 4 months and have yet to see another one! I am starting to feel quite lonely. It's not like I live in a small town, so I know there are others, but it's a very tiny amount compared to all the other kinds of cars out there. I have seen quite a few Teslas. And at our local electric auto association meetings, there are more Teslas than anything else. 

 

I am frankly surprised that there aren't more Fusion Energis but it's obvious the car manufacturers are still having a Jekyll and Hyde conflict - trying to respond, halfheartedly to the demand, but also bowing down to their oil masters. 

 

I don't regret for 1 minute buying a plug-in hybrid, as the availability of public chargers is still very sad. But yes, I too wish I could go at least twice as far on a battery charge. Hopefully both the battery technology and the number of public chargers will improve in the next few years.

Well, of course you see a lot of Teslas, you live in $cottsdale. There are more than a few folks who can afford a $100K car there.  I live in Fairfax County, VA which usually ranks fairly high in the wealthiest counties in America.  We are wall to wall with BMW and Lexus plus a fair share of Audi and Mercedes. When we travel, we often notice the difference. I've only seen two Teslas and one other Energi around here.  We do have a bunch of older Fusions, however. A local cab company operates a fleet of 2013 Fusion Hybrids, so I don't have to look hard to see another Fusion.

 

I sometimes feel like I'm slumming it in my Energi, even with the Titanium trim. When I start to feel bad, I drive past a gas station and wave to the Lexus drivers.

Yes, I too see a lot of 2013 Ford Fusions but they're not the plug-in hybrid Energi model. Big difference. The last time I got sales numbers on the Fusion Energis sold in the Phoenix area, there were only about a dozen of us. By contrast, I was told that around 200 Teslas have been sold in the Phoenix area. 

 

But I'm still very glad I bought the Fusion Energi. It cost about half what a Tesla costs, plus I can drive it anywhere without fear of running out of power. Sure would be nice if there were as many public chargers as there are gas stations.

Public chargers aren't worth it for this car--they usually charge just as much as gas costs (30cents/kwh).

 

50 states divided by 2000 energis sold = 40 cars per state with a larger share in CA, MD, and VA.

 

Most of the Ford Fusions you see are base models let alone plug-ins.  We have ultimate luxury cars hidden in a fusion's body.

Anyone with an Energi has the best of both Worlds really.

 

Since they are able to Drive on EV only or ICE/Hybrid or Battery plus ICE..

 

Although Ford is using the best Batteries available today with the Li-ion, it is hoped that the newer batteries they are working on like the Zn-air,  Li-Sulfur and Li-Air can be reproduced Commercially soon.

 

From what I have been reading, these newer Batteries would be half the size and weight and produce twice as much Power for the Li-Sulfur and the Zn-air, but up to as much as 10X the capacity for the Li-air and charge much faster

 

MIT and another company are working on the Li-air and they say that compared to the current Li-ion Batteries the Li-air if they can get them to production in 10 or so years would weight 1/3 of the current, take up 1/2 the space and put out 10 times the Power.  They are not as susceptible to heat or cold and would cost 25% the current Cost.

 

I see no reason why  in the future they could not merely switch out the Batteries.  They may have to modify the Space in the truck since they would take up less space but the Circuitry should be the same since they would operate at the same Voltage and Current, they would merely have more Capacity.

 

They say the cost per kWh for the Li-ion batteries used on the Energi are $600.00/kWh or 600 x 7.6 = $4500

 

The newer Li-air would run around $150.00/kWh  or $1140.00

 

Sure would be nice if they could get these on the Market  in a few years.

 

I read an article with Diagrams but have not been able to find it so I can link.  I will keep looking

 

imagine being able to drive 200+ Miles on EV Mode with a Fully charged Li-air Battery Pack.

Hi, dlb92, great info about the number of Ford Fusion Energis sold, but can you tell me where you got that info? I have had a Google alert out for the car for almost 6 months but evidently somehow missed it. If it's only 2000 for the whole country, then no wonder it is still so scare. Do you have a link to those sales figures that you can share with us? I would be especially interested to know how many have been sold in Arizona, if that info is available. I recently asked 2 Ford salesmen at 2 different dealerships to tell me that, but they both ignored me.

 

Also, Andre07, that is very exciting news about the future of battery technology! Again, if you can find/share the source, I would love to follow it, plus I know the local EAA (Electric Auto Assn) would be interested.

If you want to help sales, just post a photo of your trip meter (in the advanced setting) to your favorite social media site and watch what happens. I put up a picture showing 1200 miles traveled on 13 gallons of gas and it got some discussion started! Folks began asking me how much the electricity cost and when I told them it only cost me $15.00, they couldn't believe it. 1200 miles on $60, total (gas + electricity). I'm in love!!!!

Maybe by the time my battery pack needs replacement, either Ford or aftermarket will offer better than original replacements. My plan in 2012 was to get an Escape hybrid and then in 4 years get the plugin upgrade out in CA. If that niche market can exist, one hopes that in 5-10 years there will be something for us BETTER than just a replacement pack with the same capasity.

Does anyone know how many 2013 Energi's were produced?

 

My car was manufactured on 3/13/13, does that have any significance?

 

My parents will be proud new owners next week--it will be interesting to see their build date. They have an 11KW Solar farm in their back yard that powers their whole house so their Energi fuel is free.

 

If this car is kept nice and in a garage I don't see why it couldn't last almost a lifetime if you were to rarely use the gas engine.

My production estimate of 2,600 '13s appears to be way off since they apparently have been accumulating at dealerships as they made a lot more than the 400 per month they were selling. According to the Aug EV sales summary (Aug Energi numbers not available until Thu morning), "Inventory on Ford’s mid-size EV crested 3,000 units for the first time in its history in July, and got as high as 3,500 in August".

 

So they probably made closer to 5,000 '13s and have sold about half of them so far through August, which also includes some '14 sales.

I am hoping that some of these Dealerships that are not selling the FFE consider sending some to Canada cause there are none available at any of the Dealerships I contacted.

 

Ford Canada has been doing a terrible Job in Marketing and Adverstising.

 

only 4 provinces have any Electric Certified Dealerships, Ontario(2), Manitoba (1), Alberta (1), British Columbia (1) last time I checked.

 

If anyone has any more recent Numbers please post them.

 

I did contact Ford Canada and expressed my dissatisfaction in how they have been Promoting the Ford Hybrid and Energi cause they are not since few Dealerships are certified for Energi.  All they are doing is letting other Car Makers sell their Hybrids and Plug ins.

Its my understanding that the Energi was a "Toe in the Water" for Ford. They are quite happy with the numbers. In general EV/PHEV's won't hit a mainstream number the OEM's are happy with until EV/PHEV represent 2% of the units sold. Based on current sales percentages they estimate that being sometime in late 2015 to early 2016. 

 

Due to Range Anxiety the PHEV has a more immediate desire and are growing faster than the EV units (Minus the Nissan Leaf).
