I'm sure some of the smart owners out there have figured this out, but at what price point does it make it more cost effective to run on gas alone? Obviously the variable is electric price, but there must be a fairly simple calculation that can be made. As Connecticut electric rates climbed 30% over the past 3 years ($0.20/kwh) and gas prices have fallen, the cost savings has to be very minimal at this point. Additional considerations must be: 1) Charging efficiency - particularly on hot days when the battery pack has to be cooled. 2) Battery efficiency - a) as the battery gets older AND b) as winter temperatures decrease efficiency. I love driving in electric mode and think it's better to use the battery rather than petroleum products, but I'm curious about the true costs balance. Anyone figured this out? Steve

I have been talking with Fuelly.com and finally got them to add and separate the Fusion Energi as a car/engine type. So if you are using in Fuelly to track your fill-ups, you can now set it to the correct car type. And if not, go and do :) NOTE: Fuelly is not tracking power use so this only tracks the gas used to the miles traveled. They may do something with MPGe in the future. So after reading through the topics yesterday and being further encouraged by our actual fuel efficiency in the Energi, I worked up a little comparison between the Energi and the Hybrid (which we were considering), and also the Dodge Durango Citadel (which we traded in). Since we don't have many miles on the Energi yet, I used the EPA MPG ratings and ranges (seems as though many owners are exceeding the EPA numbers anyway). I'm sure it's not precisely accurate, but it should be pretty close. Looks like we're saving quite a bit (obviously) from switching out of the Durango. And based on these numbers, it looks like we made the correct choice as far as going with the Energi, though it does have a smaller trunk. Curious to get some feedback on my comparison's validity and wondering if I may have left any considerations out. Also, once I get the L2 charger installed, I'll work that into the cost, but since it came with the L1, it's valid at the moment in that regard. Once we start getting some miles under our belt, I'll put the actuals into the spreadsheet to true it up. Sorry if the image below is hard, or too small to read... Return trip home today. 92 degrees. Air conditioning set to 73. First 22.5 miles were in EV mode until battery depleted. Then reset trip odometer 2 to determine mileage for rest of trip in hybrid mode. -
