MFM not working for 4-5 days as of Nov 23, 2015
murphy replied to howardbc's topic in My Ford Mobile
It sounds like the data radio (uses AT&T cellphone network) has stopped working. The first thing to try is to pull the fuse for the data radio. However that requires standing on your head in the driver's foot well to see the fuse location. The same effect can be achieved by disconnecting the negative lead of the 12 volt battery in the trunk for 1 minute. All it takes is a wrench and care to not let the wrench touch the negative and positive battery terminals at the same time. Lay a cloth towel on the positive terminal to insulate it. -
The Energi will force burn the gasoline in the tank if it gets to 18 months. It's a sealed system so gasoline will last a lot longer than in a normal car. That said, if you expect it to go that long, because of no trips that will have to use gasoline, StaBil or equivalent gasoline preservative should be added to the tank.

I was able to report it after about 6 attempts. I think I had to use IE to get it to work.

STEERING GEAR MOTOR BOLT CORROSION- Ford Recall Number: 15S14
murphy replied to lonzo71's topic in Maintenance
Interesting, I have not received a notice that the door latch parts are available. I've been waiting for that to get your items 1, 2, 3 done. Item 4 was done a long time ago because of a failure. -
STEERING GEAR MOTOR BOLT CORROSION- Ford Recall Number: 15S14
murphy replied to lonzo71's topic in Maintenance
I received a recall letter from Ford for that problem in June. There was no mention of parts not being available. Check your Ford Owner account. There have been at least four recalls. -
Are you talking about actual driving distance or the "estimate" of driving distance? The estimate is based on how the car has been driven. Any use of the heater will knock the estimate way down. Have you checked your tire pressures? Low tire pressure means increased rolling resistance. Cold lowers battery capacity. My battery capacity is cut in half when it gets down into the 30s (F).

My power company rate is 16 cents per kWh 24 hours a day. My actual rate is about 0.5 cents per kWh due to 10 kW of PV solar panels on the roof of the house.

1. No and yes. In normal driving it will not recharge the EV part of the battery (there is only one battery). However if you were to come down from the top of Pike's Peak it would fully recharge the EV battery. In other words the engine will not recharge the battery but regenerative braking will recharge the battery. 2. Yes if you install a level 2 EVSE (commonly called a charger, but it isn't a charger). The level 1 EVSE that comes with the car is limited to 1440 watts which does a poor job of heating the cabin. 3. The most I have done on a regular basis without heat or air conditioning is 22 miles. Heat or air conditioning will reduce the range. Heat is a lot worse than air conditioning. Winter will also reduce the range. You don't get the entire capacity of the battery. The part reserved for hybrid operation is 1.1 kW I think. Also it can't be fully charged or discharged since that is very bad for a Lithium-ion battery. 4. I live in snow country (south east PA) but I don't drive until I get my driveway cleared and by then the plow has cleared the streets. Maybe some of the people from the real snow country can comment. Any chance that you could charge the battery at work?

Weatherpoof enclosure for 120v Charger?
murphy replied to decker12's topic in Lounge - Fusion Energi
How about a battery box. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_xo_0_11?url=search-alias%3Dautomotive&field-keywords=battery+box&sprefix=battery+box%2Ctools%2C136 -
You can leave it plugged in. The "charger" isn't really a charger, it is a big AC contactor (relay). Once charging is complete the car tells the "charger" to disconnect it from the wall power. The actual charger is built into the car. I disconnect mine because I have more than one car to charge. If you want to do pre-coniditioning in the winter time you will need a level 2 charger. The maximum power from a 120 volt outlet is not enough to warm the car when it is really cold outside.

Download the file I linked to in my previous post. It is for a Fusion Hybrid which is mostly the same car as an Energi. You could compare the Focus file to it to see if they are the same. I doubt that they are customized to the car but may be customized to the model. The .xml file that gets uploaded to Ford, after the install, is unique to the car and includes the VIN of the car.

Car lurches during braking, when driving over a road/bridge seam
murphy replied to mczajka's topic in General Discussion
The places where I encounter this are all recessed manhole covers located just before a STOP sign. The wheel ends up floating in mid air until it has time to drop onto the manhole cover. Try to avoid having either front wheel go over a depression in the road while you are braking. -
Don't hold your breath. The response that I got was to take my car to my dealer to have it installed. Since it's not warranty related I expect that they would charge me at least $100 but since it is not listed for my car they probably would have sent me away without doing it. I downloaded the file that has been posted on the Fusion Hybrid forum and installed it myself. It worked fine. Reporting the installation was tricky but I eventually figured it out. The link is in this post. http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/10558-version-38-available/?do=findComment&comment=100530 It's a shame that Ford apparently has no one available that knows how to correct their web site.

Poll: Ambient temps EV later and EV now locked out?

It has been moved. There is an important entry missing from the poll. I have never encountered the problem so none of the selections are correct for me. -
Car lurches during braking, when driving over a road/bridge seam
murphy replied to mczajka's topic in General Discussion
If you are regen braking and one front wheel momentarily loses contact with the ground all braking action will stop until that wheel regains traction. This happens because regen braking is applied by a motor, acting as a generator, which is applied to the input shaft of the differential. The differential can only transmit force when both wheels are in contact with the ground. If you push harder on the brake pedal and activate the friction brakes there will be braking action from the wheels that are on the ground and the car will attempt to begin ABS braking for the wheel that is off of the ground. The wheel will probably be back on the ground before ABS kicks in. The same is true for one front wheel hitting an ice patch but the duration of slip will be much longer and ABS will activate. I know most of the places, where I regularly drive, that this can happen but I found a new one yesterday. -
Rebecca says that it is and she works for Ford so we shall see.

My 12 volt battery drops all of the time but the HVB does not drop at all unless it gets really cold outside like it did last night. It dropped from 26 to 25.
-
When an Energi is turned off the HVB is disconnected from the car by contactors. If the ambient temperature goes down the battery capacity will go down. If you want to try an absolutely disconnected test, fold down the right rear seat back and open the door you will find there. Behind the door is the manual disconnect for the battery. All rechargeable batteries are subject to self discharge but I would expect the rate to be very low. I have not tested but it is possible that accessing the car using MFM may reconnect the battery to the car. I do know that an MFM access puts an over 10 amp load spike on the 12 volt battery.

Do you have a block heater? There is a known problem of block heater use causing an error to happen.
-
L is not a low gear. It provides regen braking without the brake pedal being depressed. If you were moving and off of the accelerator pedal it would provide a small quick charge to the battery. Were you in all electric mode or hybrid mode? I'm assuming hybrid mode since you were on a long trip. The hybrid mode battery is not supposed to discharge below about 25% because it is needed to get the car moving. Possibly the extended stop and go driving got the battery lower than normal.

Glue holding roof console coming undone
murphy replied to howardbc's topic in Lounge - Fusion Energi
I broke one of the retaining clips (driver side) in my 2013 when I installed the door sills. I installed a sheet metal screw to hold it in place. It wasn't easy but with the door hanging down I managed. -
Send your VIN, name, phone number to forum user FordService by private mail and ask to be added to the investigation of why 2013 cars are not showing the update.
