  1. I see you have a 2013. Was the telematics unit (modem) upgraded to the 3G version. The car came with a 2G modem and AT&T shut down their 2G service effective 12/31/2016. The upgrade is free. After setting up MFM with your VIN on the web site you go to the car and turn it on. A screen will appear on the center display with a question that you have to answer. 24 hours later the question will appear on the screen again. Once the question has been answered twice MFM will be configured with your car.
  2. It's normal for cold weather and using the heater. Energy used to heat the cabin is not available for propulsion. Try wearing a warm coat and just using the seat heater.

  4. Yes. Daily driving keeps the battery charged. Sitting for two weeks means the battery SOC is going to go down. The problem is that wet cell lead acid batteries are not meant to ever get to a low SOC. They are designed to provide a short burst of very high current and then be immediately recharged. When they get completely discharged material flakes off of the plates. The pile of debris builds at the bottom of the cell and when it touches the bottom of the plates it shorts out the cell. That means a new battery is needed. I prefer a smart charger because it can both charge the battery and maintain it. The battery maintainers on the market work fine if the battery is charged. Most can not recharge a low battery. It's another case of you get what you pay for.
  5. A couple of years after I did that someone reported that they found an AGM battery that will fit without modifying the battery tray. Unfortunately I didn't write down the specs of the battery so I can't tell you what it is. GO times do not work well using the 120 volt EVSE. There is only 1440 watts available versus the 3840 watts that are available with 240. If the car is your daily driver there should not be a problem with the battery. I am retired and the car sometimes only gets driven once a week.
  6. There is no constant pinging. The problem is constantly checking on your car when you are away. I have connected to my car after a few days of it "sleeping" and MFM says it was last updated two days ago but then it wakes it up and does an update. I have measured the instantaneous current spike, when the car wakes up, at over 10 amps. I am an electrical engineer so I don't expect you to do what I did but I removed the OEM wet cell lead acid battery and replaced it with an AGM deep cycle battery. The charge level in the AGM battery still declines but an AGM battery maintains the voltage to a much lower SOC (state of charge) than a wet cell battery does. I did that in December 2013 so it is almost 4 years and the battery is still working.

  8. The Energi 12 volt battery is in the trunk on the left side behind an access door. There are jump terminals under the hood. In the event of a dead 12 volt battery and a locked car you would open your key fob and remove the metal key. Remove the access cover on the driver's door handle and use the key to unlock the car. Pop the hood and connect a battery charger or another battery to the jump terminals under the hood and the car can be started. There should not be a problem driving the car every day. If left in the garage for two weeks the battery will likely be discharged. I connect a "smart" battery charger to the jump terminals under the hood to maintain the 12 volt battery when the car is not being used on a daily basis. Plugging the EVSE in for those two weeks will NOT keep the 12 volt battery charged. On a used car make sure that you get two key fobs and that both of them have the metal key inside and that the metal key works on that car. Note that opening the car with the metal key will set off the alarm so be ready to cancel the alarm by starting the car.
  9. The maximum charge current the Energi can handle is 16 amps at 240 volts. It would be connected to a 240 volt 20 amp circuit in the USA. The USA has an 80% continuous duty rule. I have heard that Canada recently went to a 70% continuous duty rule. That might mean the car has to use a 240 volt 25 amp circuit in Canada to get the maximum current. You can use a larger EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) if you want. The car and the EVSE communicate with each other to determine what the maximum current will be. If you have any plans to get a car in the future that uses a higher charge current you might want want to future proof for that purchase by getting a higher current EVSE now. A higher capability EVSE will have no effect on the charge time for an Energi.
  10. Only NiCAD batteries have a memory effect that can make them lose capacity if short cycled. Ni-Mh and Li-Ion batteries can be recharged at any time. Your car has a Li-Ion battery. I charge my car every time it is parked in my garage.
  11. The electric heater in the Energi is rated at 5 kW.
  12. When the car is charged to the indicated 100% the HVB is NOT charged to the actual 100% the battery is capable of. There is no need to charge to less than 100%. If you don't charge to 100% your 12 volt battery will never be topped off using wall power since that happens after the HVB reaches 100% and the notice is sent indicating charging is complete.
  13. All three power ports shut down 70 minutes after the car is turned off. You can't charge the battery that way. Connect it to the jumper points under the hood. Put a 1 ampere fuse in series with the connection close to the jumper points in case your added wiring gets shorted to ground. The positive jumper point is directly in front of the driver's seat under a red plastic flexible cover. The negative (ground) jumper point is directly behind the positive jumper point and is a long bolt sticking up out of the shock absorber tower.
  14. If you don't drive the car every day it can happen. I only drive mine a couple times a week and have to put a battery charger on the 12 volt battery if it drops too low.
  15. The car is loaded with computers that run 24/7. There is a constant drain on the 12 volt battery.
  16. If it worries you, the "stick" can be unscrewed and removed. Grab the smooth bottom section and turn counter clockwise. It has a metric M5 thread. Side note: In today's digital world how do you explain counter clockwise to someone that has never seen an analog clock?

  19. Spring and fall, no heat or air conditioning, 22 miles. Summer with air conditioning, 19 miles. Winter with heat, 10 miles.
  20. My car charges in 2 hours and 5 minutes from empty. Thus Ford is not going to warranty the AGM battery, that is up to the manufacturer of the battery. The AGM battery that I installed required removing the battery tray from the trunk and sawing the end off of it to allow the battery to fit. This was in 2013. Several years later someone mentioned that he had found and AGM battery that would fit without any modifications. Read the battery section here from beginning to end. My instructions for making the modification are there. The dash cam is plugged into the forward most 12 volt power port. The wire is routed under the headliner across the top of the windshield, down the A pillar, under the dash to reach the center console. I also added an XM radio that has a lifetime subscription (no longer available) with the antenna lead routed under the back seat, into the trunk, and up to the roof just behind the regular radio antenna. Which reminds me, I removed the "stick" antenna and installed a shark fin antenna.
  21. Maximum charge is 240 volts at 16 amps. Even if connected to a 40 amp capable EVSE it will use 16 amps. A pair of struts to support the hood. Lighted door sills. Bright brake and accelerator pedals. Replace the 12 volt lead acid wet cell battery with an AGM battery. Dash camera. I've done all of those.
  22. I use 2% of a tank per week. I have three 120 gallon tanks that can only be filled to 80%. My last delivery was at $3.0455 per gallon. I fill the tanks when they drop to 40%. Typically every 9 or 10 months. Today's price is $3.009 per gallon. I could get a $0.05 per gallon discount if I let the tanks go low enough to order 250 gallons but I don't like to let them get that low.
  23. There s a micro-inverter under each panel. Their outputs are all paralleled at a circuit breaker panel and then feed the production meter. I also have a 20 kW propane fired generator to cover power outages and enough propane on site to run for at least a week. There is no natural gas available on my street. My hot water comes from an on demand propane fired hot water heater. The clothes dryer is also propane fired. Everything else, except for the furnace, is electric. The oven is connected to a load shed module of the generator so it can be shed if necessary. The furnace is hot water baseboard heat fired with fuel oil.
